Anyone have any experience with it? And what are some stats of admitted Honors students ( I can't find any anywhere)? I just want to see if I'm a good shot to get into the Honors program or not.

Just heard back a couple of days ago.

Accepted
32 ACT
2150 SAT
4.0 UW GPA
1/450 class rank
Most challenging schedule
Good, but not amazing ECs

Did you get ur original letter of acceptance first then the honors letter later?

S1 is a junior and is hoping to go to Carlson School. I asked about Honors while on the campus tour this fall and they wouldn't me any idea what it took to get into the Honors program (as far as average GPA/ACT). They just indicated it was the top of the applicant pool. Congratulation to Aeneas for getting accepted into honors. S1 is taking the ACT for the first time on Decemer 13th but has been consistently scoring 33-35 on the practice tests. So hopefully combined with his 4.0 UWA GPA and challenging class schedule he will also be accepted.

If I do get into the Honors porgram I think that would officially put me at going to U of M over UW-Madison or wherever else I get in.

DS received an Honors Program acceptance letter last week, a few weeks later than his initial acceptance letter.

His stats:

34 ACT
2180 SAT
NMSF
Rank: 1/450
GPA: 4.0
Many APs and ECs

Yep. It was a few weeks after the acceptance letter.

I thought they said honors decisions will come in late march? I was accepted like a month ago...does this mean I probably didn't get in? I thought I had the stats for it

33 ACT/3.87 unweighted/10 APs by graduation/good ECs.

Yeah, I was accepted around a month ago too, and I also know I have the stats (ACT 34, 3.89UW,around 60 credits )

I'm pretty sure you get the decisions at around the same time as scholarships. But there's always anomalies, I know someone OOS already got a scholarship, but I think most of us will have to wait a bit more.

There was a big span of weeks (months?) last year over which students heard about getting into the Honors Program. Don't give up hope if you haven't heard yet. This is still early, by last year's experience.

Can some more people that got into honors post their stats? That would be very helpful.

33 ACT, 4.0 GPA (School does not rank), 2 APs (School only offers 2), #1/100ish Rank, In-state, a lot of college credit through college courses offered on HS campus, Leadership positions.

I was accepted into Carlson about two months ago. (ACT 34, GPA UW 3.95, 10 AP by Sr year, lots of Leadership and EC). I have not heard about the scholarship or Honors. I am kind of thinking I didn't make the cut. I know someone who was offered a free ride last year and he knew about it before Christmas.

Silverzc413 and sugar_sweet111 - Did you hear anything further ?

Nope I haven't heard anything either. I feel like with our stats we should be getting into the Honors programs....but since we're probably not getting the full rides (a girl I know also heard about hers before Christmas) they will just take a longer time to get back to us.

So don't worry, at least we'll get * some * money right? And I just have a good feeling about the honor program too.

sugar_sweet you're from EP? Me too! Do you go to EPHS?

Yup I do! I'm a senior.

I'm a graduate of the Honors Program (currently a grad student at U of M in math), and I worked in the IT Honors Office for a couple years, so I can say a few things about it.

I was home-schooled, so my GPA is irrelevant, but I had a 34 composite ACT (36 math, 34 English, and at the time those two were the only ones considered by the program; science and reading were pretty much ignored) and a 1550 SAT (780m, 770v). I had also done the UMTYMP math program at U of M.

The admissions to Honors (at least five years ago) were really dependent on those ACT/SAT scores. I knew a student who had taken 5000-level math courses at the U of M as a high schooler who was rejected from Honors because of his ACT. I also know a student who, like me, did the UMTYMP program (which results in two years of college math credit), and also took U of M Physics I and II while in high school (and was the top student both semesters) who was rejected because of his English ACT.

However, if you get 33+ on your ACT, specifically on both Math and English, you're almost a lock. You really do live or die by your ACT; admissions to Honors aren't really that holistic. They also look for AP credit or good high school background in chemistry, physics, and calculus, but they're willing to overlook weakness in one or more areas if your test scores are really good.

(I don't know if this policy has changed since all the Honors Programs merged; when I was admitted, and when I worked as a tutor in the office, the IT Honors and CLA Honors programs were separate, which is no longer the case.)

As far as the program itself, I can't speak to the social life, since I lived off campus and commuted. The grading was very lenient; Honors Physics gave out no grades lower than B the year I took it (other years have been slightly stricter, but still, no D's or F's).

(One final word, for anyone interested in majoring in math: take Math 3592H if you can. Every incoming Honors student (in IT; again, I know nothing about CLA Honors) will be expected to take Honors Physics I, most of you will be expected to take Honors Chemistry I, etc., but there are THREE math honors sequences that freshmen take: Honors Calculus I, Honors Calculus III and Honors Mathematics I. This last, Math 3592H, is the only one suitable for a potential math major. I'm the TA this year, so I know something about this course. Honors Calc I and III are good courses, but they are explicitly aimed at engineers and scientists, not pure math majors.)

Holomorph - thanks very much for the information. My S is a junior in HS and is very interested in U of M's honors program. He will be applying to Carlson School of Management. His first ACT was 33 (but he had 35 M and 35 E) ~ hopefully that will help him out. He also has very strong grades, many honors and AP classes, and is top of his class (of 200) at a competitive private school. We are from out of state, but it is a state that has receiprocity. I appreciate you taking time to share this information.

Since the honors departments merged they may have slightly different standards. D got an honors offer and her ACT math score was 32 (her overall score was higher). She applied to the CLA. I think GPA and class rank also figure very heavily.

Mom2010

This year U of M is giving out a $7500 per year to National Merit finalists. For their top OOS students they also reduce the tuition by 4K making it equal to tuition for in state students.
