Acceptance Letter Question...

I keep hearing about this “likely letter” – what is that?? I mean, is it an acceptance letter… a letter hinting that you’re accepted… or what? If it is a letter hinting at something, how do they do it?? Just somewhat curious. Most of the “likely letters” I heard about were from the Dartmouth forums. Weird CC terminology hahah. It took me like 3 days to figure out what “HYPCS” meant and the hackneyed “bump” lol. Gracias, amigos.

Likely letters are sent to athletes, high-stat URMs, and other extraordinary applicants. Yes, it's an acceptace.

Thank you... but perhaps a WEE bit more info would be more helpful... thankz

The typical likely letter usually says something along the lines of: While we can't offer you admission now, you should know that unless something extraordinary happens, you're in and you'll receive a fat envelope come April 1. Basically, it's the college's way of attracting the attention of the very best candidates (i.e. the ones most likely to go to even more selective schools, so in the case of Dartmouth it would be the likes of Harvard, Yale, Princeton or Stanford) early on in the hopes that the marketing blitz between the likely letter and May 1 will convince the lucky recipient that they should go to that school.
