My daughter has applied for the BFA MT program for the fall of 2011. She received an acceptance letter however she is still required to audition. Does this mean that she is assured, probable, likely or other with respect tothe BFA MT program acceptance?

This means she’s been ACADEMICALLY accepted by the college (mine got the same lovely letter, a really great academic scholarship award and a card with the encouragement to send a deposit…). You’ll find that all the schools are different in how they go about accepting kids. What we’ve seen so far…

Rolling admissions, academic and artistic acceptance separate.

Rolling academic admissions, artistic acceptance at end of tour (seems to be Otterbein’s route.)

Acceptance to college ONLY if artistically accepted.

Acceptance to college separate from artistic acceptance by a certain notification date.
5 Academic screening (must be acceptable to the college IF accepted into the major), then acceptance to the school contingent upon acceptance to the major.

I’m sure there are other ways that schools go about it…it’s mind-boggling as we try to keep everyone’s rules straight!

As for her BFA program acceptance to Otterbein, I’d choose “other” – Otterbein accepts 4 females into the BFA MT program out of hundreds who audition. But be glad she’s got the hurdle of academic acceptance out of the way! Check that off, and make sure she’s really prepared for the audition. What is her audition date? Maybe we’ll see her there that day!

The acceptance to Otterbein, as mentioned above, is simply an acceptance into the college, not into the MT program. This acceptance has no bearing on your D’s odds at being admitted to the BFA in MT program. It is entirely separate. Right now, she could choose to attend Otterbein and major in something else. She must be admitted separately to the BFA in MT program and that is by audition only. The acceptance in your hands now has no meaning or indication of what will happen with that. As the post above me indicates, all colleges have a difference admissions process and notification process but this is the process for Otterbein. So, don’t read anything into this acceptance other than your D was accepted to the general college at Otterbein unrelated to her intended major. Congrats to her on that, however!

Congrats as well to mommafrog’s D on the academic acceptance to Otterbein and the scholarship!

Thank you both for your insight. My D was also awarded a fairly significant scholorship and is scheduled to audition in NYC at unifieds.

The scholarships at Ottterbein are awarded based on your GPA and test scores - and they are pretty generous. Have you seen this link?

^ MTMama – yes – one of our search/selection criteria was for schools that offered “guaranteed” merit money for kids w/high academic credentials, as we all know talent dollars are few and far between, and an opportunity for kiddo to be able to have her academics be a part of the package is important.
