Hi guys-

I was blessed enough to receive an out of state acceptance letter from UNC and just have a few questions... Since there is such a small amount of out of state students.. do they stick out at all? Socially? Is it an accepting culture at UNC? I am from Minnesota and was wondering how well I would fit in. Also.. I really want to go to a school that has a ton of school spirit and tradition, does UNC fit the bill?

Thanks!

No they don’t really stick out at all. The foreign (non-Canadian) student stick out. Not so much tradition (unless you count rushing Franklin Street), but lots of “spirit.”

My son is OOS - loves it, no problem. Has many friends who are foreign as well. Good friends from all countries, states and plenty from NC.

I’m OSS and have had absolutely NO issue fitting in at UNC. We are all Tar Heels, not ISS or OSS. Plus, everyone here is incredibly friendly. It was actually a little unnerving at first. I couldn’t believe the number of complete strangers that would say hi to me while walking across campus…LOL.

UNC has phenomenal school spirt. Tar Heels are really, really into it! And it is not just the students, it is the whole town of Chapel Hill (note the color of their fire trucks). I find it amusing that I can wear a Carolina blue logo shirt anywhere in the US and it won’t be long before I’ll hear “Go Tar Heels” from someone. When I meet an alumni, it is like meeting family (that’s how they treat you).

There are many traditions. Some examples are; On the first day of school you must drink from the Old Well for good luck (some say straight A’s), Standing and putting your arms on your neighbors shoulders to sing the alma mater after every game along with the team (win or lose), Halloween: Dress up and parade around Franklin Street, UNC-Duke Game: Paint up for the game and storm Franklin Street after the big win, Guarding the Old Well overnight before the UNC vs NCS football game (aka the Well Watch), The Senior Year Climbing of the Bell Tower, Late Night with Roy, Finals week streaking in Davis Library, Town of Chapel Hill painting their fire trucks Carolina blue, The kissing bench under the Davie Poplar, etc, etc, etc.

Hope you weren’t a latin major!

hoopjack13, I am also from Minnesota! I am awaiting a response from UNC still (regular decision). Would you be willing to share your stats with me? I understand it is very hard to get in OOS and I’m trying to gain an understanding of whether I will be accepted or not. Where are you from in MN? I am right outside of the Twin Cities in Shoreview.

I’m from the Coon Rapids/Blaine/Andover area. ACT was a 34, 3.99 UW GPA ranked 2/603, lots of APs, 3 sport captain, NHS prez, FCA leadership, and a bunch of service and other stuff! My essay for UNC was straight up goofy and captured my personality really well! Hope this helps and good luck to you (:
