I’m a prospective student from New York and I’m wondering how I would do at UNC. Would this transformation be difficult? I feel as northern as northern can be. Thanks so much!

My first reaction is absolutely not difficult to fit in, but, what specifically are your concerns?
I have heard of northern exclusion at southern schools along with very different values
Well then, no, you will not experience that at UNC. People are very friendly and welcoming here. I’m also from NY and I know many OOS students from the northeast and I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t love the environment here. You will hear more “Y’all’s”, but that’s about it…
UNC has a much smaller percentage of OOS students than many other top state universities, so if admitted (no easy feat for any OOS applicant, no matter how good your stats), you will be part of a community that is about 80% in-state students. Those in-state students will hail from big cities like Charlotte (a major banking center) and smaller cities like Asheville (a craft beer mecca), Winston-Salem (home of the nationally recognized North Carolina School of the Arts and Reynolda House Museum of American Art), and Wilmington with its thriving film industry. North Carolina has a lot more to offer than tobacco fields and Krispy Kreme (although I do confess I’m fond of the latter).
^ not to mention a significant influx of new residents, from all over the country, seeking the benefits of a great job market and more reasonable cost of living. I’m often surprised at the number of first generation transplants I meet.
Who doesn’t like Krispy Kreme!
