@streetcred
Do you know what a hag wan is? I’m sure you realize that they are quite popular in places like NYC. They are filled with students from ages 5 and up. Students who spend countless hours performing rote math. Their parents spend thousands upon thousands of dollars throughout their children’s lives. To ensure that they outperform others in admissions tests.
It’s a fact, that if one spends almost every waking hour(besides when attending school), in a hag wan(aka cram school), for 10+ years of their lives, of course they will do well! Not unlike a stellar athlete…It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out…
I’m not taking anything away from anyone…but when one has 10+ years of practice & constant testing, they SHOULD outperform their counterparts. I applaud their parents for having the foresight to come to this country and figure out how to outperform others on a consistent basis.
But when those students call foul in a process that ISN’T GUARANTEED to them, it gets old and makes them look very spoiled!
Just as a winning $250 million powerball ticket isn’t guaranteed to anyone, neither is acceptance to an elite college.
Which is irrelevant, as your link discusses high school admission policy. How does this relate to the stated topic of this thread?
Heads up to whomever suggested going to the race in admissions thread - Tanner just chimed in there with his world view. Actually national - he thinks the U.S. is a meritocracy. How do these instigators think they are top tier material? Misinformation and poor grammar abound.
@streetcred is the one who is envious. It shows in her consistent bashing of URMs. It’s funny, @NewHavenCTmom has gotten you so fired up and p*ssed off. Your anger shows just how jealous you are. Pipe down you are far too transparent!
@Duceandaquarter - you applaud them but then in the next breath you say 'it makes them look very spoiled"? There is nothing wrong with making an investment in your child at an early age to make them more successful. I’m sure that helps keep them off drugs and street corners. More people ought to make investments in their children at a young age - instead of expecting the tax payers to do it for them.
Picktails, sent you a pm with a correction!! My bad, lol. L-)
I am not jealous of anyone. I do not live off ‘the system’ . I am happy to write my big fat tuition check in the fall knowing my son got into his college with a great merit scholarship based on HIS credentials, not because of my marital status, ethnicity, etc… I’m not slamming another kid saying ‘lol -they are jealous of my kid’. Nope. Sorry I couldn’t envy someone who threw another race under the bus while elevating her own child. That’s really classy don’t you think…
Everyone, regardless of race, that was accepted to X college deserves it. No matter which college it is, he/she deserves his/her hard earned admission letter. The college saw something in the application that stood out from the rest, end of story. All admits are selected because that particular college believes they are a good fit for the college and because the student has a high chance of success at the college level. If they didnt put in the hard work and effort, the aren’t holding an admit letter. Whether the applicant is white, Asian, Hispanic, or African American, I don’t doubt that they are very accomplished. I truly do feel sorry that they have to deal with the whole “you just got in because you’re a URM” situation. People should stop being so bitter; if you/your child didn’t get in, there’s a reason behind it that doesn’t involve a URM taking “their” place in the freshman class.
/rant ends here/
I don’t think you have answered my question. Do you think that blacks should receive a 300 point curve on their SAT scores. How is this not racist and discriminatory?
How do you figure that URMs get a 300 point score boost?
How does streetcred think she is not racist when she keeps rehashing tired, untruths. As I mentioned a few pages back, there are more white people than any other race on public assistance in this country. And other than private scholarships, there is no school aid based on ethnicity. My D received some great merit aid from great schools - Northwestern and Tufts among them. None of her awards were based on race, only academics. If she would discuss (rather than argue) based on facts, instead of riddling posts with comments about “street corners” and such there would only be civil disagreement.
Right on @Kitten23… no more
I doubt anyone of these folks would answer your question @TannerSmith - …To the person who has a pic of her victorious daughter please refrain from referring to me in any other posts you are associated with it makes me feel tainted to say the least…
@picktails I agree with your point, although there are some schools in the Midwest that offer generous scholarships solely on the basis of race (those schools are 90+% white, so they really want to bring URMs to campus), but big schools don’t have such scholarships, as you mentioned. Congrats on your D’s merit scholarships, btw. You must be proud
@picktails, just an aside (nothing to do w this thread): on tufts’ website and here in its forum, the university states that it doesn’t offer merit scholarships. So does it indeed offer a merit scholarship?
@RenaissanceMom - Tufts does not offer merit scholarships - (this is from their web site “Tufts does not offer any merit or academic scholarships. All aid is based solely on financial need and is not adjusted for superior academic performance”. Neither does Northwestern unless you are NMF - it says so on their website…
^Maybe her daughter is a NMF, you don’t know.
Yes, she was a National Merit semi-finalist, and Achievement finalist. National Achievement counts the same as National Merit; I supposed you could argue a racial aspect there. Hmm, maybe Tufts was a private scholarship; I know they offered her something over FA. I agree and was surprised, as the top tier does not offer merit aid. I’ve tossed out everything once she decided to go to Penn, so I can’t check.
