D still a little unsure due to the fact that during an overnight stay some of the kids she met made fun of her for being "smart" (was there for the Fellows competition). She got the feel that there are alot of fairly wealthy kids there and wonders if she'll fit in. We're not poor but no way can she buy 150$ pair of jeans!! She really likes Elon and the 8K for Honors Fellows + 4500 Pres. Scholarship helps the tip balance in favor!

Hmmm...my guess is that they were just being funny. I was there for Fellows weekend and didn't get any of that kind of vibe. And I met a lot of "smart" kids there as well, not just the ones competing for Honors. Is it possible she misread the comments given that she didn't know the kids who were making them?

My DD accepted a long time ago...Elon is the only college she considered. We were there for Fellows weekend as well and only heard wonderful comments from everyone. We saw and met many students-like 4mygurl-they weren't all Honors. There were several eating lunch in the cafe (we ate in the cafe in Moseley Center) and most were dressed in sweats and t shirts. They all looked the same to me.

Don't worry about the "smart kid" comment. This will happen at pretty much any schools (minus the top tiers of course) - it all depends on the crowd you meet.

There is plenty to get involved with and while many students do come from wealthy backgrounds, many of them don't care where you came from/how much money your family has (there are the snotty kids of course - but once again, this will happen anywhere you go and they are not that prevalent). Being in a fellows class, she should have minimal issues meeting people who share the same focus as she does.

Good luck to her.

Being smart in college is a good thing. I don't think I've ever heard anyone being made fun of for being smart. For being stupid, or a meat head, or a ditz, that's a much more common occurrence :)
