My daughter is a Junior and the plan was to try next fall for ED1. However, she looked at the stats for those who got accepted this past round and it was 1470-1550 SAT and 4.1-4.7 GPA. I know the N’Eastern website says those are averages but is there much variation from those grades/scores ? Thanks
You can look at Northeastern’s common data set (CDS) to see the full range of test scores of matriculating students, which is usually lower than the admitted ranges. NEU does not complete the average GPA section in the CDS. The most recent CDS is 2018/19, the one for this year’s freshman class should be out soon. Section C: https://provost.northeastern.edu/uds/facts/common-data-set/
Generally, many of the matriculated students with test scores below the 25%ile are hooked in some way(s), e.g., athletic recruits, URM, low SES, legacy.
The 4.1-4.7 GPA range is suspect…clearly not recalculated on an unweighted basis, so it’s not really helpful. If your D’s school uses Naviance, that will be the best way to gauge her admission chances, although at this point, NEU is a reach for most.
FWIW, it appears to me (from a very small data set) that NEU is more test-score concerned than GPA concerned. (And that they really also look at a student’s “self-motivation” factors, as well as financial needs for ED1.)
In case this helps: My kid just got into NEU ED1.
Her UW GPA as of end of last year was 3.55-3.6 range at a very competitive private school. She got 4’s on 3 APs (one of which she took as a self-directed independent study) Took ACT 2x (32, 33, 34"superscore") She applied to D’Amore-McKim in an approved Double-Major with CAMD and sent in an optional portfolio. She has some pretty unique and high-level (but obscure) ECs - an unusual craft, JO level in a non-recruited-anywhere sport, interns in a quirky business, GS Gold Award etc. Showed a lot of interest. Said “maybe” to NUin (got direct to Boston) and “no” to fin aid.
She has a friend from HS who she thinks has similar stats who did not get in ED1. No idea why.
We have a friend who was admitted NUin two years ago, somewhat lower stats, extremely competitive HS as well, and is an accomplished and skilled writer, as well as great “on paper.” Attending CAMD.
I’d check your HS naviance if you can, but my guess is if your kid’s ACT/SAT is in the mid-range, depending on what program they are applying to, and if their resume suggest they are “self-motivated” and “a good fit” they have a good shot if their GPA is not too far below 3.6 or so. (Remember it’s supposed to be easy to change majors once you’re there - I don’t know if that’s true. Poets and Quants reported D’Amore’s average UG SAT was ~1470 last year, fwiw.)
Dunno how useful this is, but I’m happy to answer specific questions if you message me.
@Friesland NEU does not admit by Major and it is very easy to change majors. Many kids even change majors when they put down their deposit.
I would only recommend looking at the last year or two of Naviance, not historical, from your school. NEU has become so much more competitive and with the introduction of ED, that has changed the admission process bc they re looking to protect their yield. ED was introduced two cycles ago I think as a new trend with many schools but also after they were overenrolled by over 300 students a couple years ago which created some housing and class issues.
Naviance from your daughter’s school is probably a more accurate indicator of her chances than the NEU website statistics. Our Naviance (good suburban public HS in NY) shows roughly 44% acceptance (56/128) to Northeastern over the past three years. 2019 was 18/35. For applicants with an UW average of 93 or better along with either SAT of 1380 or better/ACT of 31 or better admit rate was 90% (36 out of 40). Almost none of these applicants were URMs or otherwise hooked.
@dtrain1027 Be aware that those acceptance figures in Naviance include those offered NU In.
