Hey guys, I was wondering what my chances were for UVa. About 10 minutes ago, I was feeling great but I got my AP grades by phone and now I feel like crap. I got a 4 in Eng Lit, 3 in APUSH, 3 in Physics...ugh.

Of course UVA only accepts 4's so instead of a potential 19 credits, I get 3.

But besides that depressing news, here are my "specs".

SAT I- 780-M,690-R,640-W= 2110 (UVa's top 25 has at least a 2150)
SAT II- 640-M2,650 USH,660 Physics
ACT - 32 Composite (UVa's middle 50 is 26-31 so at there is some good news)

International Baccalaureate Program
3.85/4.00 GPA, taking AP Physics, AP Calc BC, IB HL Chem, etc
Lettered for 3 years Varsity Tennis team (Ranked # 3,5,7)
Captain of Tennis Team
NHS
Debate team, admitted into National Forensics League
Legacy (Dad and Grandfather went to UVa)
Working 2 Jobs (Cracker Barrel/Publix) (whole year)
Employee of Month at Publix July 2005/ Good Employee at Cracker Barrel
Asian-American
Ranked 17th in class of 460

I'm also taking a very very vigorous course load this year as well.

I'm going to retake both my SAT's and hopefully get into the 2250's and the 750's. Also, I'm doing some volunteer work over the summer.

So yeah, it would be really great if you guys could give me some advice/tips.

Thanks!!!

Your chances are actually fairly good. The IB program definitely helps, although whether or not you get your diploma or not is inconsequential, since there aren't actually results until way after you've been accepted into college.

Your SAT I score is very good, but your SAT II scores are only average. I would say that the ACT is definitely not necessary with your SAT I score, and if you plan to retake it and can expect an even higher score, you'll be fine there. As for your AP scores, since those are standardized tests, you may be penalized for them, as someone excelling in a well-planned course load is far better than someone loading up on APs and then doing poorly on the tests.

I really can't say how much legacy will help you, since almost all colleges officially state that it matters very little, but who knows. It won't hurt you.

You are within the top 5% of your class, and show good work ethic with two jobs.

I would rate your chances of getting into UVA as decent to very likely.

Also, if you get in, make sure you try and apply to the residential dorm of Brown College at Monroe Hill at UVA, just to see what filling out their hilarious application is like.

I agree with the above -- match (maybe even safe match).

UVA is never a safe match unless you have a 4.0, instate, legacy, and stellar SATs, and great recs/ECs/essays.

Since you're legacy, you're treated as in-state during admission rounds, so you're competing against the 3.8 instate kids instead of the 4.1 OOS kids. Just remember, there are a ton of other legacy kids out there with great stats and while you're "instate" during admissions, you're still OOS on paper, and UVA only accepts ~30% OOS to maintain the 2/3 instate enrollment. So, your 3.8 may beat out the other 4.2s from OOS, but there may be 4.2s that are legacies that will most likely beat out you. Pay close attention to your essays though, UVA takes them seriously and it may help you.
