after ED decision got thrown away. UVA has gotten so much harder to get in. My top two choices are Carnegie Mellon and UVA, but with my test scores, I think i have very low chances for CMU. Do I have chances for UVA though?

oh. i am top 10% of my class as well.

Your test scores are in the top 50% of last year's freshmen so those are fine. Your GPA is acceptable, your SATIIs are high, and you took the hardest course of study you could. Your ECs aren't bad either and you are in state so I would say you have a good chance. Although, it all depends on who is applying from the nation and your area (UVA doesn't want 10% of its incoming class to be from Fairfax). Good luck.

Your AP scores are a little alarming. You have +/- 's in your portfolio. Hard to say, about your admission question. I'm just not knocked out about anything, to be honest. Where's your hook?>>What makes you better than every other good student, from every high school, in every town/city in VA, and the world? You need to distinguish yourself more so, than you have done in this CC posting. Sorry, this is a constructive critique.
Advice: dare to stand out. Be different. Walk on the edge.>>Write great essays.

Good rank though>>That will be to your advantage.

thanks for the input powderpuff. i was thinking the same thing. I really don't have something that's just 'me'. just gotta work on an great essay that will stand out.

Your math scores are off the chart! Hmmmmm.....you are obviously a sucker for #'s, I mean that in a nice way ;)
AnyHoo>>maybe that's your hook?? Really, an 800 in Math IIC, that's outrageous. Stress the positives, your good rank, and excellent math scores can offset those low AP scores. Be creative, sell yourself. You are definitely in the competitive range.

You know, I went over your stats again and to be honest an savvy adcom will notice what I did. You went for rigor a little early and maybe crapped out a little on some standardized tests in your sophmore year but overall it looks pretty good.

My single greatest piece of advice right now would be to work hard on the CR & W sections of the SAT. IB Math HL speaks for itself, as do your SAT II's. Show your are well rounded by getting above 700 in the CR & W and I think you have a very strong shot. Check the naviance scattergrams on blackboard, and this will give you a good indication of how you look against in school competition.

BTW, I don't think you look bad for CM either.

I don't think AP scores can hurt you, only help you.

They can be made up for in other ways.
