My daughter auditioned today at West Chester University and was accepted into the vocal performance department. This was her first audition - 5 more to go. Everything was handled well by the school. They were scored on theory, aural skills and performance on an instrument. They had to get a certain score on each to get admitted. We were there at 8:00, testing started at 9, her audition was at 10 and we had the results by 11:15. She had four teachers as adjudicators and she found them to be very welcoming and they went out of their way to make her feel comfortable. The recital hall was unavailable, but the choral room had really nice acoustics. All of the practice rooms were made available so there was lots of room for warming up - and each is equipped with a Steinway piano. The new music building is state of the art and lovely.

Congratulations. It's nice to have that first audition done, and with an acceptance as well!!

Thanks - I learned that they are smart to separate the parents from the kids right away. At one point I commented about misplacing things when nervous and she said, "Mom, I'm not nervous, you are."

Congrats. May your d have many choices. Good luck with the rest.

Wonderful news! Congratulations! I hope you can relax now.

Great news. I guess it is time to start the 2008 Master List of Music School Acceptances.

Congrats, Cartera. I can appreciate your comment about separating parents and students -- as I have mentioned more than once on here: My S2 says he doesn't ever have to worry about auditions because I do so well for both of us. :)

Ditto Binx, and big congrats to you Cartera! Exciting news!

Thanks all - I can at least relax through December - until January 12 and the next audition. I admit to being a worrier. I constantly worry about her getting sick and I worry about how good the accompanist will be, etc. She did comment that the accompanist at WCU was excellent. Nothing settles a vocalist more than having confidence in a new accompanist.

mommybird, I sent you a "worrywart" PM a couple of weeks ago. Did you get it?

Things have been extra crazy around here! I thought I had responded. I will go back to it and try to figure out what happened. Very sorry!

Congratulations! How wonderful to have one down and with an acceptance!
Tell me, is that the usual procedure that then and there after the audition they let you know re acceptance?? No waiting till April for a decision?

I don't know about West Chester in particular, but many schools make you wait anywhere from a few weeks to a few months after the audition.

It depends on the school AND the audition you attend. Some schools have early auditions with an early decision. I know both Hartt and Duquesne have this. If you take their first audition date (at Duquesne it's the Friday BEFORE Thanksgiving, and at Hartt it's the first Saturday in December), you will hear your audition results before Christmas with your performance award, if any. For the rest of their audition dates, you wait until the spring.

Does anyone know of other schools that audition/decide early?

Oberlin holds early auditions the first weekend of December, with a decision of admit, defer or reject due about two weeks later.

We didn't find any other school that does what West Chester does and that is one of the reasons my D chose to audition there early. There is nothing to indicate that they don't do it this way for each audition day. It requires a lot of planning on their part and things were very well organized. First, they have to receive the university application in time for approval to audition. They don't call it a formal academic acceptance but they won't schedule an audition unless you're qualified for admission. On audition day, you are given a form on which to indicate if you are willing to accept other placements if you don't score high enough to reach your goal. There are 4 possibilities - performance, music ed, BA in music and undeclared (acceptance to the university with the hopes of re-auditioning after taking music classes.) The theory and aural tests are done first and the tests are scored during the auditions. My D sang 3 songs for 4 voice faculty members who scored her on the spot. Within a few minutes of the audition, she was given a sealed envelope with numeric scores from the adjudicators. After the audition, each student is scheduled for a 15 minute exit interview with a faculty member. That person has the theory and aural skills scores and the student brings in the sealed audition envelope. In the meeting, the faculty member opens the envelope and lets you know if you received high enough scores on all three to be admitted to your desired program or you are offered alternative placement. You must reach a certain number in each of the areas in order to be admitted. Everyone leaves that day with a decision.

WOW! Congrats Cartera! I have never heard of an audition like that but that is the way to do it. My daughter can't wait to have an acceptance! We do not know anything about West Chester. Is it a state college? Did your D get into a Bachelor of Music program?

By the way, I am the one whose Daughter did not get an audition for the Bachelor of Music Program at CCM. They called her today and wanted her for their Bachelor of Arts program. They went on and on about her grades and she told them she is not interested in that program. It is a "non-conservatory" program at Cincinnati and she was only interested in the conservatory. Great, this got her all wound up again!

Yes, the degree is a BM in Vocal Performance. She still has 5 more auditions to go, so there is plenty of stressful time left, but it is nice to have an acceptance. I believe one of her other schools will let her know within a couple of weeks of the audition so she should know about another at the end of January, but the other results will not come until March or April. We really searched for a school with rolling admissions for her to start with and WCU met the criteria - nice campus and well-credentialed faculty. The incredible facility was icing on the cake. We actually thought for some time that Elon would be the choice for rolling admissions, but after visiting, decided that wasn't the right program for her so she didn't apply. I have to give credit to posters on this board for suggesting finding a program that offers rolling admissions and auditioning early. WCU is part of the University of Pennsylvania system, so it is a state school, but we are out of state so we don't get the benefit.

Cartera- Has West Chester told you about scholarship awards yet? I was wondering if those were awarded on the spot as well or in the spring.
