I’m really nervous, because I am planning on applying to Tisch, for acting. But overall, I don’t have acting experience, and am above average but not at the top of the academic range. Should I apply to Tisch if I really want to become an actor, or is not possible without some kind of background? I’m ready to do anything to get into acting, and am going to attend a summer acting program at NYFA. If my portfolio doesn’t have amazing samples, and I want to be in movies, what exactly can I do? I heard for the application itself you need to have two monologues? Should I take my chances as it is what I want to do, or should I just stick with NYU stern where my chances are better as I have a better chance in the business field? Please reply I’m ready to do anything to become an actor, but just dont know what exactly to do

If you have a teacher at your school that heads up the theatre/dramatic studies-ask them. They understand the requirements, and they know your abilities and your interest. Good Luck!

Do you want to go to NYU because you think it is the only school to attend to become an actor, or because you really want to go to NYU?

If you want to go to a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree program in acting you will be asked to do an audition consisting of at least 2 monologues. Each school will have slightly different requirements however.

NYU is a selective BFA program, and it is a selective academic institution. While a strong audition might boost your admissions chances, if you don't meet the basic requirements to get into NYU I don't believe even a superior audition will help.

Most people applying for admissions to acting programs in college have some experience, but for many it is limited to the high school theatre program. Have you been involved with that group or a community group? If not, that doesn't mean that you can't get into an acting program, however, you are probably going to want to find someone to coach you on your audition pieces. You will also need a resume detailing any acting experience you do have.

Attending the summer program at NYFA is a great idea! You will learn a lot and get experience to put on a resume.

Are you primarily interested in film acting? Most undergraduate acting programs focus on acting skills, most of your opportunity is on stage, however, not on film. You may be able to take a class, or get involved with student films though to supplement your on stage training. In general the wisdom seems to be that acting is acting, and that film vs. stage is more about learning the different styles.

You sound as if you still have some time before you have to apply to college. If so, I suggest getting involved at school and/ or in your community. Also, if you really want to go to college to study acting look into a lot of schools. This is actually a Musical Theatre Major thread. You may want to look up NYU on the Acting thread.

Good luck!
