Acceptances 2016?

CT?

CT = Contemporary Theater. It’s a straight-acting, ensemble-based program that is new at Boco this year.

Son heard nothing on MT yet

Good vibes for you MT-ers.

My D.'s decision was posted to the portal a short while ago! Best of luck to everyone!

Good news I hope?

@2019theatremom Wait list at BoCo for my D. Much less hard to hear today than it would have been earlier this week. Lucky for us she finally got a yes from a program she loves just this week. We’ll try to work out a visit to Boston soon, hopefully they’ll accommodate that for someone just on the waitlist.

That’s good to hear. I can’t imagine them denying a tour! A good acceptance definitely helps with the sting of no or maybe.

This process doesn’t make sense to me. We heard University of Arizona already called all those who were accepted and my daughter wasn’t called … then she is accepted into the Boston Conservatory this morning … scratching my head on all of this - I guess it’s all subjective. U of A would have been in state tuition for us … as a parent I am bummed.

There is a Boston Conservatory MT Class of 2020 FB page that is already started!

@japbmom Gosh. I hope your daughter doesn’t feel like your daughter is “settling” for BOCO; I can’t imagine being anything but ecstatic!

S accepted for MT via portal. It is his first choice, but I don’t know if I can justify the $50K/year loans he would need to take.

@LittleEdy - she is ecstatic!! But as the Mom who has to try to find the money to pay for all of this … the in state school would have been a nice option. However, my daughter would rather go out of state to this school or some others she is accepted into. They are 17/18 years old and do not realize the realities of trying to pay off $200K+ in loans while trying to break into a very competitive field.

@japbmom I think I can answer. Boco makes about 100 offers to yield a class of 40. Arizona makes 10 offers total. It’s an odds game and yes it’s nuts! We are facing the tuition as well …but a great admit!

As for the loans – I can’t address that. The tuition costs are crazy and I can’t justify 200k in loans either! I firmly believe schools are taking more out of state to get the higher tuition recovery.

If BoCo makes 100 offers to start assuming more than half won’t accept anyway, doesn’t sound like there’s much chance to come off a waitlist. I’ll be calling them on Monday to learn as much as possible about the process to see if the chance is worth the cost of a visit.

@fotokat I don’t know about boco and their wl but I do know many people turn them down because of cost or other options. I personally know 2 girls accepted who will likely not be attending because of other offers. Don’t give up and yes ask questions. Interest seems to help! We are asking the same questions of our wl which is still a contender.

My daughter doesn’t even want to go visit as she knows we can’t afford to pay for it and there will be student loans. We were hoping for more scholarship money. She is leaning towards OkCU - more reasonable and offered both merit and talent scholarships.

@mtmamma2020 Boston Conservatory is a private, independent college. Tuition is the same for in state as it is out of state. Yes, many public schools give an admissions advantage to out-of-staters because of the out of state tuition but how does that apply in this situation? BOCO does not give any kind of admissions advantage to out-of-staters because there is no economic reason to; there is no “tuition recovery” in this case.

@LIttleEdy I have not idea why that post ended up here – was meant for UCLA board, not boco

BoCo classes are HUGE! 70 were accepted for Class 2019! Not an anomaly for BoCo, in fact 10 more than past 6 years. That means potential 240 + 10 MFA auditioning for every Main Stage and student directed show.
WITHOUT warning at start 2015 academic year BoCo cancelled Class 2016 NYC Live showcase. 60 BFA +10 MFA too many to showcase. Only 1-2 weeks ago website changed to advise no Live. Seniors do not choose Emphasis. They can only request, but it’s really just another “show” that’s cast by an instructor. 12 to an Emphasis class. Traditionally only 2 Acting Emphasis instructors for class size of 60. Added a 3rd instructor for 2015-2016 only after fury of complaints. Too many Seniors end up without an Emphasis. A potential huge disappointment at end of Junior year. Don’t know if Berklee merger will help housing situation, but BoCo has dorms only for freshmen. Be prepared to pay upon return from Freshman Winter Break your s/d $5k-$6k prorata share (first, last & equal to 1 month rent security fee) for securing an apartment for sophomore year. An apartment near BoCo on / near Hemenway will run about $1260 a month for 1/3 of 3 bedroom. Most landlords forbid more than one to a room. If not near BoCo costs do go down & students contend with trains being on time or even running in snow. With housing costs BoCo easily runs $60k+ per year.
