my list as it stands:
Accepted: Penn, Duke, Brown, Berk, JHU
Waitlisted: Yale, Swarthmore, Georgetown

texastaximom, UofCh is closer to Midway airport, and SW flies out of Hobby (aren't you closer to the south side of H?) so the fares might be cheaper. We will be flying up for April 9th. Can't make the overnights, because of Amherst overnight already planned (they are paying for her to go) and UIL competitions.

Oh man! They'll just miss! Yes, he's got to go in the middle of the week because of UIL and NFL. (that's forensics NOT football ;) ) Our district UIL is this weekend. I figured that is what you were talking about.

I don't know why he picked that route, probably something to do with one way tickets and rental cars. They are coming back through Minneapolis, not back down to Chicago. Yes, we are south of Houston but closer to Corpus. There is a small aiport in Victoria, just a few miles away, but it just adds about 100 bucks to your ticket, and the shuttle flights are always late so you miss your connecting in Houston. :( It's easier (just aggravating) to drive. Occasionally we can find a SW flight out of Austin at a decent rate.

Have driven 59 south through Victoria to Corpus many a time. Just heard yesterday that SW has a special fare going for later this summer to Chicago -$80 one way. Will be checking into that, as well. Our problem about going in the mid of week is that if the kids miss more than 3 days of school this semester, they lose their finals exemptions. And, for the 1st time in 4 years my daughter got sick 2x this semester, and missed 2 days. So, she only has 1 day left. And she says she is NOT going to take finals, since she has straight A's, and is salutatorian. She only has 2 weekends free, and has to juggle her visits then. Good luck to your kids at UIL. Mine is competing in social studies. She won the State Citizen Bee in Austin last year, and won district again this year. She will be going to Austin in May with that again, also. Nice thing about that is, they give a $1000 scholarship if you win.

Thanks for the info on the low fare! We'll have to watch for that. Next time you are driving down 59 Corpus way you'll have to stop in. I live right off 59 by the Inez rest area, only my bathroom is cleaner. :p

UIL also gives scholarships, but I think you have to use them in state. My S went to UIL state last year in LD and IX, but I don't think he can apply for the scholarship money because none of his schools are in state. He just picked up district in LD last night. Has IX today and got drafted for current events??? just this Thursday. Good luck with that I say.

Our school gives two "college days" and he applied to two additional days, which he was granted. Fortunately all of the UIL, TFA and NFL stuff is excused. He's had some weeks where he's been out more than in because of school events. (doesn't keep the school from calling to tell you they are absent though....) I can see why your D doesn't want to miss with so much on the line!

Thanks for the info. I'd love to visit your bathroom. Mine isn't that clean! LOL Anyway, she is going to request school activity status for a couple days so she can go overnight at UofCh. Your son sounds terrific! Hope our kids can meet someday. They both like the competition. She can't wait to get on the UofCH Quiz Bowl team!

Wow, waywardchild! I've known several people who got into British universities based on IB, but not AP (especially UCL!). I hope you get in. I agree though, Chicago's better. :)

obviously uchicago. ucla doesnt compare.

i agree with varsity. In terms of education. UCLA does not compare. However, with all the other factors one should consider when choosing a college (i.e. this student body is going to be my friends, this is where Im going to live).. i can see how its a tough decision.
To emphasize my point, UCLA doesnt compare academically.
