Just curious jorr08....Where are you getting these figures? They are different from what is listed on the website and in Brandeis' scholarship pamphlet. Has Brandeis cut back this year?

it was from the 2007-2008 brochure that they gave me at the admissions office when i went this fall

Thanks for the reply jorr08 - You seem to have more current info than us. My D has a scholarship brochure and the numbers listed are higher. (25 JSB, 25 Presidential, 35 Dean's, 10 MLK, and 10 Premier Trustee of $10,000)

Just like admissions, it seems scholarship money is getting harder to get too. To all those who received these awards - Congratulations!!! You should be very proud!!!

i have not seen either source you two are referencing about the number of scholarships -- but can i just ask -- does the info you are looking at refer to the number that are offered or the number that are enrolled (and if enrolled, is it per year?) that could explain a difference.

number that are offered.

i would guess a high number would enroll

It seems that there are three versions afloat regarding how many merit scholarships are actually awarded. Am I the only one interested in which is correct?

D accepted with a full scholarship but is not interested in attending. She wants to go to UMD for more money. Does it make sense to anyone out there? She wants big school with spirit, sports, choices. If anyone can help sway her towards Brandeis, I would be forever grateful. Any suggestions? Coming to the open house though (mostly to please the parents). Help!!!

UMD? Wait was it full scholarship or full tuition?

and is it UMD college park? if not, then brandeis all the way.
As for spirit, it is a different type of school spirit. Brandeis isnt a drunken, beer-swilling campus full of people screaming for sports team. At brandeis, people respect academics, and personality more, and is a much more open campus.

As for options, you cant get more options than brandeis. ever wonder why the normal is a double major and u have a bunch of people with triple major-double minors lol?

and as for scholarships, our numbers may be wrong, but the point is that a very small number people get these scholarships.

chuckling WorkingMom, I feel ya! Funny though: We had to drag our D kicking and screaming to apply to UMD. She was adamant that she didn't want to attend in-state flagship U w/ spirit, sports, ID#s (I think both schools'll have choices, tho). She wanted whimsical, quirky, socially conscious, academically rigorous, JUST big enough not to be "small" -- with a crowd that digs dry humor. Once she found out their debate team acronym (Brandeis Academic Debate - And Speech Society), it was pretty much a done deal. The whole castle dorm thing didn't hurt either. ;)

Gah! There's no accounting for preferences, but who knows? Maybe the visit will clinch the deal. See you on the 10th!

Thanks for replies and support. It is UMD-CP and they gave my D an $8K/yr Presidential scholarship. But as an OOS student, she would have to pay additional $14K vs. nothing at Brandeis (just R&B).
Anyway, we are going to the UMD open house on 4/4 and Brandeis on 4/10. I am not holding my breath though.
BTW, my older D is graduating from Brandeis in May. She did really well there.

If she does not want to go to Brandeis, please, please, please DON'T talk her into it.

She will enter with a chip on her shoulder and not be happy there.

Please give her spot to somebody who really wants to be there.

Hmm.. I don't really know why I was accepted. My gpa is pretty average, i'm ~90/300 ranked in my school, and I didn't show interest. I applied as an afterthought, while I was finishing my apps at the last minute.
