Accepted, academic scholars, Housing question.

I was accepted to MSU a long time ago. They just sent me a letter telling me to accept an academic scholars request or something. So I logged on to the website and they asked if I wanted to reserve my housing at Holden Hall with other academic scholars I guess. My question is will I regret doing this. I want to know if it is a good residence hall location wise, also for a first year student. I am also not really a bookworm, I like to have fun and I want to know if I will feel out of place in this environment.

Also have lived in Columbus, OH for all of my life. So i want to know what it is like for out of staters at Mich St.

I am in the Honors College, which is different from the Academic Scholars program. I live on an honors floor and I don’t regret it. While it may not be as crazy as other dorms, we still have fun. While we are required to meet higher standards to remain in the Honors College, we still find time away from studying to hang out with friends, explore campus, and have parties, most of which do not include alcohol.
Holden is not the best location on campus. It’s at the far west corner near the train station. It’s about a 20 minute walk to the heart of campus, and a 30 minute walk to Grand River Avenue, which is where most of the shops and restaurants are located.
All in all, if you want a more structured first two years at MSU, I would accept the Academic Scholars invitation.

yeah it really depends. I was on the honors floor in case my first year…overall the kids on my floor were pretty nice. However aside from my suite the large majority of my friends were off-floor (on my honors floor there happened to be a lot of sophomores and they already had their friends and didn’t really reach out to make friends with the freshmen). It will likely be different for you, especially since holden is primarily a freshman dorm. I was initially afraid going onto the honors floor that everyone would want to stay in and study, were anti-social and didn’t party at all. Generally, there are more non-drinkers/non-partiers on the honors floor but this is Michigan State…even honors kids party/go out, and some honors kids party harder than non-honors kids. So I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you - I’d definitely choose to do academic scholars. Worst comes to worst, make friends that live off your floor (not a hard thing to do).

I really like Holden. It may be far from Grand River (where most shops/restaurants are), but it is close to the sports stadiums (football and basketball), right by the tennis courts and a relatively short walk to IM west and Goodrich’s/Quality Dairy (grocery stores). The cafeteria’s pretty good (has odd hours though) and there’s a large amount of freshmen. The suite-style bathrooms and rooms are pretty nice as well

I am also an out-of-state student. Although the large majority of students are from in-state, it was rather easy for me to get adjusted. When you start college, nearly everyone is trying to make friends and it makes no difference whether you are from in-state or out-of-state. It might be easier to make friends with other out-of-state kids though, because you have something in common. Most kids stay on campus during the weekends anyways (and go home once a month at most).
