does anyone have an guestimates on how many applicants they may be accepting for early action?

by the way, for the early action process, will uva still follow the 2/3 va applicant rule?

You’d have to use data from several years ago when they offered EA (but do the math in terms of the growth in number of applicants now, which has increased vastly since then!). Maybe look at Common Data Sets from the last year that UVA offered EA? Not sure if the EA accepted students will be completely on target in terms of the percentage of out-of-states and instate applicants, since they have room to adjust the target goals in the regular decision round. It’s all just guessing right now, but it will be really interesting to see the outcome of this year’s EA round.

Wait, I just did a little homework and it looks like UVA offered ED which will show much different data results than EA. Here’s several Common Data Sets from over the past several years. But it won’t be able to translate well to EA this year, so we just have to wait and see :):

Read Section C 21 for previous years:

http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/cds/current/admissions.htm

UVa had ED most recently, not EA.

I realize that now, we just cross posted :)

Does anyone have acceptance rates for in-state versus out-of-state? Thank you.

See this post from Dean J’s blog last year: [Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: Admission statistics for the Class of 2015](Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: Admission statistics for the Class of 2015)
For class of 2015 the rate was 45% instate and 26% OOS. Of course the acceptance rates will depend on the total number of applications (EA and regular) from each group.

There are many many more out of state applicants than in-state (I believe twice as many). The intent is to maintain the current in-state/out of state ratio, but to increase the numbers of each in phases over time.

UVa and other universities are following a commitment to the Governor to increase enrollments. After several years of budget cuts, the state, in turn, is providing some additional funding. This includes tens of millions in capital improvements for UVa. that were announced over the last year. There is a need for increased enrollments because Virginia’s population increased by 900,000 over the last decade.

President Sullivan said that UVa has enough housing, dining and recreation facilities for increased enrollments. However, she recognizes the need to increase the faculty’s numbers, and is seeking to make that a priority.

@charlieschm
so they’re not planning to use the in-state/out-of-state ratio during the ea process?

I don’t know. However, logic would tell you that they would try to keep the in state/out of state ratio similar in the new EA process as they have for the regular decision process. They probably don’t want to be in a situation where they have to skew their decisions in March to make up for the EA decisions. The in-state ratio is not negotiable - it must be maintained or the fire and brimstone will be cast down upon Cville.

UVa has to maintain the IS/OOS ratio of 2/3 to 1/3 (or 70/30 depending on the source) for the class of 2016. But that ratio doesn’t relate directly to admission figures. That is because the “yield” for accepted instate students is historically much higher than for OSS students. E.g., about 60% of accepted instate students matriculate at UVa vs. around 30 to 35% of OOS.

That’s why the number of acceptances for IS and OOS are similar. Since there are many more OOS applications (in part, I believe, because IS students have a better perception of chances for admission), the percentage of OOS applicants accepted for admission is much lower.

It is hard to predict statistics in this first year of EA. IMHO important numbers will be the ratio of IS to OOS applications in the EA pool; the ratio of EA applications IS to prior years’ IS totals; and the ratio of OOS EA applications to total OOS applications in prior years. Of course, Admissions’ perception of the “quality” of the EA applications will also be key. Time will tell whether Admissions is conservative this first time around with EA. Since they will know the total number of applications from the class of 2016 before issuing EA decisions, they may not need to be.

FWIW there is a plethora of interesting data available at the following site: [Data Catalog: Institutional Assessment and Studies, University of Virginia](http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/datacatalog.shtm)

So I assume that since they want to see how many RD apps they get, they won’t release EA decisions before January?

We won’t release decisions before January because we have over 11,000 applications to read.

We’re pulling pretty crazy hours to read these files in a thorough, fair way. You seem to be thinking that we can do this in a couple days, but it takes months.

Understandable! I’m just being impatient, my apologies. Take your time!

Dean:

If you want to decrease your workload, maybe you should take the admissions tours into Newcomb for some of those infamous Tuna Tacos.

My statement about how hard we work was not a complaint. I do this because I like helping students navigate this process and enjoy building the classes at UVa. :)

Dean J, how long before students get notification that UVA has received their EA application?

I am assuming we will get an email with and ID so we can check the status online to make sure UVA has received all of our application documents.
