Hey! How strong is the biology program at NYU? I know it's an artsy school, but I've heard that the research opportunities are great. Is the pre-med program good as well?

Hey! I’m double majoring in Chemistry and Neuroscience at NYU. I’m not a Bio major but Neuro involves a ton of Bio so I’ll give it a shot:

The bio program here is overall pretty strong. It’s not #1 like math or philosophy, but you’ll get a solid education with plenty of opportunities for undergrad research and internships. The only kind of bad class in the Bio major imo is Principles of Bio I and II, the 2 introductory courses you’ll take freshmen year. This course is stuffed with Bio, Neuro and Biochem majors, not to mention preMed, preVet, preDental and prePharm kids, so it’s a huge 500 person lecture class! There is also a weekly lab which is a lot smaller (mine was 10 people) taught by a TA. Bio lab is when you learn techniques like PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, Dissections, Micropippeting, using a Colorimeter, etc - you’ll have to put this stuff on your application when you apply for summer internships and such.

After Principles of Bio I and II, Bio classes get significantly smaller. This is because pre-health students only need to take 2 bio classes so they’re done with bio after that, and because many freshmen interested in Bio, Neuro and Biochem are weeded out.

Pre-Med isn’t really a program; it just means you’re planning to apply to med school. Majors like Bio, Biochem and Neuro cover all of the requirements and will prepare you really well for the MCAT.
