Hi, I am a high school junior and I'm thinking about applying to NYU next year. From what I have read it seems as though the top programs at NYU are film or art related. I was wondering if anyone is a science or pre-med major that could inform me on the quality of the classes, professors, etc. Thanks!

NYU does have good art/film programs, but we also have top programs in business, math, philosophy, econ, etc…it’s not just Tisch. I’m double majoring in chemistry and neural science in NYU-CAS. Other science majors include biology, biochemistry, and physics. Let me tell you a little about classes in each dept:

Chemistry/Biochemistry - first you’ll take 1 yr of Gen Chem, which is a huge class filled with lots of science majors. In addition to lecture twice a week, there’s a weekly recitation taught by a TA and a weekly “clinical” class to practice problems. There’s also gen chem lab, which has it’s own lecture and final exam. Then you’ll take 1 yr of Organic chem, which a lot of sci majors dread, but I liked a lot. Labs are more difficult and you work independently, but they’re a lot more interesting than in gen chem. Both the profs for gen chem and orgo are really good. After this you’ll take more advanced chem classes like physical chemistry and advanced chemical experimentation, etc. Btw, Biochem is the more difficult major with more classes.

Biology/Neuro - You’ll start by taking gen chem (described above) and Principles of Bio I and II which is a “general bio” class - I didn’t enjoy this class much; it’s huge, and involved a lot of memorization, and was taught by 8 lecturers over the year. Labs are ok, not long like in chem. More advanced bio and neuro classes are smaller and more individualized. Neuro has a lot more requirements btw.

Physics - Don’t know much about the dept, but it’s a smaller major than the others. Lectures/recitations are smaller and often taught by TA’s.

There is no “pre-med” major, you can major in whatever you want and apply for Med/Dental/Vet school. You do need to take certain classes to apply for med school, and the requirements are covered by every major except physics and chem (chem covers it all but 1 yr of bio).
