Accepted, But did I get lucky? (and a few other questions)

Major: Human Biology
Eleanor Roosevelt College

Sat I: 630 reading 800 math 630 writing (2060 total)
No Sat II
3.81 UC GPA
Essays were not very well written, but they personally meant a lot to me.

'Senior Year: AP Biology, AP Mandarin, Calculus AB
No AP tests taken (Took regular Bio, Chem, Physics other three years)
No extracurriculars.
60 hours of volunteer work at an animal shelter

Questions:
1). Did I get lucky?
2). Is it alright to get accepted into ERC for Human Biology majors? I'm seeing alot of Revelle Muir Warrens on this forum. Will getting accepted to ERC affect what classes I can take?
3). Lastly, what differences does majoring in Human Biology Vs. General Biology make? I ended up choosing Human biology. I plan to apply to the dental schools.

Thanks for reading! Please post any opinions/thoughts, it'll be very helpful.

Congratulations to anyone else that got accepted! I'm very very happy to have gotten accepted.

1) No fluke, my friend. You’ve worked very hard and deserved your admission.

[Oh, wow, that was an ill-placed comma.]

2) Hey, I got in Sixth (3rd choice here), and there’s not much information about that college in general (not even in Google). So I say it’s pretty normal. Rare colleges acceptances unite!

3) Got some links for you:

From what I’ve read, Human Biology focuses on the human body, whilst General Biology teaches general biology, which encompasses not only biology in humans, but also plants, ecology, etc. Some Hum. Bio programs does cover the plants and ecology sciences and what not, but Gen. Bio just does it in a deeper level than Hum. Bio does.

(And it sounds like the biggest no duh ever, but that’s what I’m getting.)

The threads I’ve read are all people thinking of going to medical-related professional school (med school and nursing school) and a lot seemed to prefer Gen. Bio over Human Bio. The CC thread I posted even had some people claiming that Hum. Bio is ‘watered-down science’. Buuuut, keep in mind that for the longest time, med schools have the rep of having an ‘Oh, pursue what you like! Just do well on your MCAT and req’d classes for med school!’ attitude.

Thank you for your quick response! I’m feel much more reassured that this was not a fluke. After looking over my essays again, they really weren’t as bad as I remembered them to be. It’s just scary how pretty much everyone accepted to UCSD have way higher SAT scores than I do.

Congrats on your acceptance to Sixth college! :)

General biology is just a more flexible biology major. Look at the different requirements in the courses. Human biology has more required classes, while general biology has only a couple and the rest are electives. You could theoretically take all of the same classes as a human biology major and get a general biology degree. Either major is fine. Dental schools (or any graduate or professional school) will get your transcripts and will care more about what classes you took than the name on your degree.

Thank you baktrax, I didn’t think of it that way.

Congrats on the acceptance! How did you find out if you got in? I’m a little confused about how I check my own status…
