Anyone know how difficult or easy it is to transfer into the CIT after freshman year. My son was accepted as a Physics major and waitlisted for Mechanical Engineering in the CIT. Now he's torn between going for a sure thing at Lehigh's Engineering college or trying to transfer into CMU's CIT (his 1st choice). Please help!!

Your son will be able to switch from MCS to CIT with not that much difficulty. I’ve had many friends go from Chemistry in MCS to Chemical Engineering in MCS. If your son comes to cmu, ask him to speak with the advisors in MCS and CIT as soon as possible. Also, he should consider taking some of the same classes as MechEs, although, a lot of the classes do overlap anyway. Its also not that difficult to do BOTH physics and MechE, so you could consider that path as well. But CMU engineering is one of the best in the nation, so you have to realize it’s not going to be easy pickings.

hope this helps =]

Thank You so much for the reply!! Are you a student, advisor or faculty at CMU?? It would be nice to know the source of your info!! It is very much appreciated! We are visiting again next weekend so we will be sure to talk to advisors in both the MCS and CIT departments!! Thanks again!! :)

Your welcome
I am a current freshman at CMU enrolled in MCS, and have bunch of friends in MCS that are currently or have already transferred to CIT

It’s official! We left our deposit (gasp!) for his admission to CMU as a Physics major. He’s still on the waitlist for CIT but the student consensus was that he could do one of many options: double major Physics & MechE; minor in MechE or try to transfer to CIT altogether! Seemed like a win-win-win situation to him! Thanks again phosphorous for your recommendations.

I was also waitlisted. Do you know what the chances are for waitlisted students to become accepted? I’ve read various statistics and was wondering what the truth is.

Were you waitlisted to CMU or admitted to one of the other colleges and waitlisted to CIT like my son? If the former, then you can ask to be on the Priority Waitlist which will give you an edge on those in my son’s position. That’s what the Admissions Office told my son.
While most administrators and faculty my son spoke to on our visit said they “couldn’t guarantee” getting off the waitlist or transferring, many current students he spoke to said what phosphorous stated above. Right now, my son is thrilled to be admitted in MCS in Physics and looks forward to either double majoring/minoring in MechE or transferring to CIT altogether. He’s psyched about starting CMU in August!! Good Luck!!

I was actually waitlisted for exactly what your son got into, physics in MCS. I guess my chances are decreased with your son choosing to attend MCS, but I did choose to be placed on the priority waitlist. Hopefully this gives me some kind of a edge. I heard the priority waitlist has a pretty good admission rate.

acp812, Well, I’m rooting for you!! Good Luck!! Keep us posted! You should be hearing in a few weeks…
