Accepted, could I reapply next year?

I have ONE school in mind, on the other side of the country, that I recently applied and was accepted to.

I was offered a minor merit-based scholarship from the school, not nearly enough to scratch the surface of the debt I'd be in once I graduate.

Given the major expense (tuition, the move, etc.) that I'd have to manage VERY soon, I have decided that it is probably best that I wait at least another year.

Does it reflect poorly on applicants to reject and offer and reapply at a later date?

I really want to attend this school, but I simply CANNOT accept and arrange everything by the fall.

Call them and talk to you about your situation. Worst case you are where are you are now, but you never know. Many times they can be quite understanding!

You can often defer acceptances up to one year.

Talk to them about your concerns. They might give you a moving bonus as a friend did receive one from her PhD program. It wasn’t even explicit in her package- she only found out later when the department sent out a welcome e-mail.
