I completely agree with Fordham admissions and am upset as well. First of all, the Bronx is NYC's largest borough. Second of all, the surrounding area is not a ghetto-- those who call it as such are ignorant and most likely have no idea what it's like to struggle in the real world. I hold alot more respect for those working hard out o n Fordham Road than the all-too-familiar students like you who think the area is "below you."

First off: Brooklyn is larger, so you already display your ignorance. Second off, if you've seen the crack deals going down first hand on the corner of Fordham Road and Valentine, you tend to find it "beneath you."

Read "Blue Blood," by Eddie Conlon, NYPD and Harvard Graduate. You'll see the other parts of the Bronx which are a ride on the bus away. Don't get righteous on me, I live in and know this area man.

I don't know I'm unsure at the moment. I'm not sure which school has a better department. I know that I want this major to lead me to law school though.

As someone who has lived in the Bronx my whole life (and still does) I love how people from “affluent” areas declare that the area surrounding Fordham is not a “slum” and are actually insulted by it. Well, the area is a slum and dangerous as well–especially at night.

I’m not a ■■■■■ or have an axe to grind. Just a long time resident of the Bronx who knows the area very well. My point is that people who don’t live in the area should not judge it by an occasional visit. Fordham Road (not Fordham University) has been a “poor” area for many many years. It is not the suburbs. Fordham University campus is very beautiful, but the area outside the gate is not. Do you remember when the 3rd Avenue el was taken down or when Alexander’s closed??? Do you remember when the giant trees were cut down to build the university library. I do, I was there.

I grew up in the Bronx and I remember Alexanders and the El. Your point? (BTW, remember Jahn’s Ice Cream Parlor? great memories). There is also Botanical Guyardesn, Little Italy and the Bronx zoo all part of the Fordham neighborhood as well.

ANY urban school will have good and bad areas. Think NYU (the Village) and Columbia (Harlem) are in perfect neighborhoods? but these schools offer amazing opportunities just by being in NYC. Lofty Yale? Hartford is very urban. UPenn and Temple?, again very urban…I could go on.

Fordham, along with NYU and Columbia are top schools offering top opportunities. They are all in the greatest city. College is a time to learn, to grow to become an adult. You can insulate yourself in a far away campus, or you can study in a vibrant city… but it means a level of maturity and awareness that helps you to grow up and be aware of the world: good and bad.

Yes, there is crime in NYC, so those of you who make issue, don’t pretend to be shocked that the Bronx has some crime…this ain’t Kansas Dorothy. But then, can any school in Kansas offer what Fordham can offer?

Oh my gosh! Sorry to go off topic for a minute!

My grandmother lived in the Bronx, right across the street from the armory. She used to take me to the movies and then we’d go to Jahn’s!! She’d let me a big gooey sundae! You just brought me a huge smile! And she worked at Alexanders for a few years until they made her retire. Best egg creams at a place around the corner from her apartment on Reservoir Ave. Left my jacket on the train ride at the Zoo. This was in the 1970’s, early 80’s.
One time, my cousin and I took a long walk and ended up at an empty baseball field. Turned out to be Fordham.
Thanks RamRay!

And I agree, I used to work near Penn Campus in West Philly. I’m glad my child chose to go to school in Manhattan rather than Philly.

“Think NYU (the Village) and Columbia (Harlem) are in perfect neighborhoods?”

Columbia, no of course not. NYU? Yeah. The most “dangerous” experience I’ve ever had down there is being offered “free” rap CDs that cost $10! And I go there often at all times of the night/day since that’s where a ton of fun stuff happens.

That doesn’t really have anything to do with the safety of the neighborhood they are in, but yeah, Fordham has way better housing at both of its campuses.
