I'm soo excited! I just got accepted for fall 2010 into the RCAH college! :) :) Anyone else applying for RCAH ?? And does anyone actually go there that can tell me what it's like and all?

I am so excited and relieved that I got in.. but i'm starting to feel scared about college. I am also kind of getting depressed because i love my life.. my family and friends;... and i'm starting to realize i'm not really going to ever have this life again and it's really making me sad. I know it's weird but I love my school and I will even miss my teachers :(. it's so early in the year too.. so i don't know. i just feel like i have so many mixed emotions =( has/does anyone else feel like this?

AWESOME! I’m a first year in the RCAH!
I hope to see you here next year! Congratulations!

The program is beyond amazing. There are courses for pretty much ANY type of interest you could have. The first year you take 2 writing classes and 2 social studies classes all about cultures (in general, transculturation). They tend to all interweave with each other. You also take a seminar your first year where you get to study a variety of topics. Mine is next semester.

The second year you focus on art workshops from pretty much anything you could want to do. You also start to focus on the community engagement aspect of the major.

The dorm is amazing. We have our classes right around the corner. Plus, we have an art gallery on our floor, 3 music rooms in the basement, an awesome lounge in the basement, and a language lab.

Any questions just let me know!

thanks for the response! Well i have a few questions… how is your social life so far? do you have a lot of friends? and if you do… do you go out a lot or do u have a lot to study? are your classes hard? what are they like? oh and how often do you go home if you live in michigan? becuase i only live an hour from MSU. thanks!

I live an hour from MSU. Because of circumstances, I’ve been home nearly every weekend (wedding, dad’s best friend passed away, dad broke his foot, etc) but normally I would not go home that often. I also have a car which makes it MUCH easier to go home and back.

I have a lot of friends now. Everyone in the RCAH is pretty close because we all live and go to school together. I don’t have to study a lot, but I am pretty busy. I am taking 18 credits and I work ~20 hours for my job. I’m not really the type of person who likes to go out, I’d much rather stay in and hang with my friends. But there is plenty of time to go out and party if that’s your thing. The classes aren’t hard, but I’ll recommend a few teachers you want and don’t want to take if you stay with RCAH. Overall, the classes in here are very interesting rather than hard.

The thing a few people have been struggling with is the language requirement. But that’s really the only negative that I’ve heard of so far.

ohh cool well it sounds pretty great! you seem really busy. what’s bad about the language requirement? and i know RCAH encourages it’s students to take classes outside of RCAH so are you? if so what ones? and are you doing a double major? oh and i heard the food is pretty awesome is that true?

The food is beyond amazing. eatatstate.msu.edu shows the menu for our caf (The Gallery).

A few people just don’t like taking a foreign language is all. You must be at least proficient (usually that means through the 202 level of a language) to graduate from RCAH. They do encourage you to double major or minor in something. I am double majoring in anthropology and possibly taking a concentration in documentary studies. Almost everyone I know is a double major. Journalism and theatre are popular second majors.

Right now I have 2 RCAH classes, 1 GSAH (global studies in the arts and humanities), Spanish, and astronomy. It’s busy but I like it. I didn’t need a job, but I wanted to work.

Oh okay well i don’t mind taking one since this is my fourth year of french. And anthropology sounds like a pretty cool major!

So is there a big sense of community in RCAH? do most people get along and are most people friends? and do you know everyone in the school? i read that there is 600 undergrads, 150 per class, so does every undergrad live in snyder-phillips?

and also, are most people really into arts like painting and stuff? because while i appreciate art, i’m not really looking to do it/study it in college. i am really into english and analyzing things i read… and learning why people do things. i absolutely love music, but i don’t sing/dance/etc. is that okay? i’m just not sure if people who are in RCAH are supposed to study art & english at the same time.

I love anthropology and since the RCAH is pretty loose, it is easy to double major. Plus, a lot of the classes in RCAH complement the anthro major really well. Since you like French, there is even an RCAH course your second or third year that’s all about conversational French or something like that. Spanish is my language (and I am going to take ASL as well) so I’m not sure what the French class is all about to be completely honest.

There is a big sense of community. Like I said, my dad’s best friend passed away the third week of school (we were very close too) and word spread very quickly. Even people who didn’t know me were coming in to hang out and some took me out for ice cream and stuff just to make sure I wasn’t alone (I was a complete wreck).

There is actually 100 people in our class. All of them (as far as I know) are in Sny-Phi (girls in Snyder, boys in Phillips).

As for art, I am NOT big on art at all. I like English/humanities. But even my stick figures look deformed lol. It is perfectly fine! Pretty much all of the first year classes focus on English/humanities anyways. The second year we have art work shops but they can be music, art, anything! It’s really open, so don’t worry about not being into art.

And if you love music, there is always somebody singing or playing an instrument. It’s nice to have live music in your hall every once in a while lol.

the french program sounds cool! and all the people sound really nice/laid-back! and i’m sorry about your dad’s friend . thanks for all that information, i’m 100% sure that RCAH is the right choice for me

and one more question: are there a lot of boys in the program, or is it mostly girls? and also do you meet a lot of people outside of RCAH?

Um, it’s about 75% girls, 25% guys. I haven’t met a ton of people outside of RCAH, but I only have classes in Snyder this semester. I have a few outside next semester where I will meet people. It’s easy to meet other people if you want, it’s just been difficult because of my circumstances. Plus, when you live and learn with the same people, it’s much easier to just be friends with them lol.

Like I said, I hope to see you here next year! And of course any questions just ask.

Ok, sounds great, thanks soo much! I’ll see you next year :)
