Accepted RD for 2010

For those of us that were waitlisted, it's really looking as if being put on the waitlist is the kind way of telling us that we are rejected. Also, since they are filling 185 spots, I'm sure they accepted much more than that figure. To top it off, I've seen more waitlisted decisions than accepted decisions, and, even though ~30 decisions might not be representative of them all, it's looking as if there are about as many if not more that are offered the waitlist than accepted. I would have rather had them tell me that I was rejected than offer me the false hope of acceptance in the future.

Also, I believe I heard that waitlisted students usually get minimal aid at best, is this true? If so, I won't even bother.

Hey peeps, I am just dropping in before class (Humanities)... I'll address your questions around 1PM PST.

I'm gonna beat Graham to the response (although he of course can submit his own later) cause I have a break at 11.

First of all, while many people do have issues with this school's academics (including me) there are also many who dont (like many of my friends, who have GPAs > 3.5).

Now to adress specific things:

Admiral: The rankings I've seen have put Mudd way up at the top for undergraduate chemistry, and as a biochem major, I can personally vouch for the professors here and say that they are incredible. Every one that I've met so far (and I've met most of them) has been great. Also, there is no clinic for chemistry; instead, all senior chem majors are required to do research. You want to do research as an undergrad? Seriously, come here. Beyond the required senior research, there are also many opportunities within the chem department for underclassmen to do research, as well as several summer opportunities. You might not have as broad a range of topics as could potentially be available at a bigger institution, but there's definitely a better chance of getting into it, and there's a pretty good range of project topics anyway. Also, do you really want to pick your school based on it's architecture? Sure, Mudd doesn't have the prettiest campus, but it's awful... and I can guarantee if you come here, you'll stop thinking about it pretty quickly. And of course, if you want something a little prettier, that's when you go visit Scripps and Pomona. On that note, there are a lot of people who cross register. If you want to take any foreign language, you'll have to go off campus (I took a French class at Pitzer last semester), and the other schools have a lot to offer as well. I suppose it's technically possible to fulfill all your requirements at Mudd, but it's kinda nice to get a change of scenery once in a while.

hypernovae: It IS possible to get in off the waitlist. I saw something a page or two back about officially posted stats re: the waitlist the year I enrolled here saying that no one got in off of it, but I'm a little confused as to where that information is coming from, cause there's a guy that went to my high school that was originally waitlisted but then got a full ride. So you can get in off the waitlist AND get money. I don't know how often that happens, but it does happen. :)

hallo88: If you want to have a social life at Mudd, it's very doable. Many of us love to party, and there's almost always something going on at least one of the weekend nights. And if there's nothing at Mudd, you could probably find something at one of the other schools. We become a very close knit group, and you get to know pretty much everyone in your class, as well as many from other classes. I don't know as many people from the other schools, but I'm working on that. Have no fear, you can still have a social life if you come here, as long as you learn to manage your studies as well (or you can just go out and have fun anyway, and worry about classes during the week, like I do).

If I've missed any critical questions, I'm sorry, there was a lot to cover. Just ask again, or maybe rocketDA or one of the other current mudders will find it.

radio-don't you mean "it's NOT awful?"
It's not all that bad, as the whole area around it, with the other 4 schools and the town of Claremont (charming) helps the whole vibe of the place.
I think Cal tech is much less appealing, as it's so closed in = no open space to speak of. Mudd, on the other hand, has an overall open/nice feeling if you consider the whole Claremont consortium, and the surrounding area.

It's not hard to see why... You got 4 5s and 2 4s on AP tests, so they naturally assumed your school is highly competitive. The SAT II science scores didn't hurt either.

well, like i said before, i wanted to receive the best possible education i could get. i felt hmc fulfilled this requirement with flying colors.

there is a lot of humanities exposure at mudd. you are required to take 12 humanities/social sciences classes. it accounts for 30% of your overall courseload.

i got accept to mudd on 1290/1600 (shush dont tell anyone!) with four 5's on AP's (physics b, calc ab, calc bc, chem), SATII's -MathIIC-790, Physics 800, Chem 800, and i don't remember Writing...600 or so, and a class rank of 37/670 or so. of course, i really didn't put much effort into hs academics and music was 40% of my courseload. hs was so easy it was a bore.

i had several hooks- drumcorps, drumline, music section leader, rocket enthusiast (big!), science fair winner, worked at jpl, did 2 year of COSMOS, and participated in an AIAA conference (the only minor to do so). that's why i got in. i did not give a **** about testing. i took the SAT's once and took my bc calc class online. i dunno... i lived life for the interest in subjects...not to just try to get into college.

sorry about the in-cohesiveness, i'm in a rush. late!

oh and no, there is just the right amount of hum/SS at mudd.

A.S.A.P. -- yes, I did mean it's NOT awful.

Woot! $16,700 scholarship! Now I can't decide! :(

wow now i'm confused...

i have stats that are nearly identical to hallo88, yet i got waitlisted.
then again, UC Berkeley gave me regents so there's really nothing to complain about.

hey hallo88, i'll trade you my Berkeley regents for your Harvey Mudd acceptance!

...how do you know you've gotten Regents already? That shouldn't come out until tomorrow.

fine... i'm a semifinalist, but i still got accepted. you happy quirkily?

Stats:
SAT I: 1820 (CR 460, M 780, W 580)
SAT II: Math IIC 800, Physics 760, Chemistry 710
GPA: no gpa
AP: doing IB
IB: predicted 38-39 points out of 45
Rank: no rank
TOEFL: 267

Subjective:
Essays: I thought it was pretty good.
Teacher Recs: Very good for math and physics, average for economics
(I sent in both math and physics, and they requested for a humanities recommendation)
Counselor Recs: dont know
Hook: Invited to BMO1 (top few hundred mathematicians under the british school system)

Location/Person:
Country: Thailand
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Strengths/Weaknesses: good recommendations, good math and science scores, very bad verbal, and pretty by humanity and english grades
Why was I rejected: The rejection was not a shock for me as I think HMC is a reach/match for me. However, I did not require any financial aid and I am asian, which i believe would have given me a much greater shot. Anyway, rejected...... its hard to accept that fact.

i'm very sorry to hear that anonamous.

you seem like a driven person, which will help you succeed no matter where you go. i honestly wish you the best of luck with the college game and the future.

graham

Thanks alot rocketDA. May i ask you something rocketDA, I got accepted to clarkson with partial scholarship and i plan to attend clarkson, and transfer out after my freshman year there. If i improve my SAT 1 & 2 and get good grades and class rank, gpa at clarkson, will i stand a chance transferring to HMC? Is it harder to transfer into HMC than freshman admission?

Also, my other options are UMich, UIUC, Cornell, CarnegieMellon. Do i stand a chance? and how much should my SATs verbal section have to be to have a good chance of admission? I plan to retake my SAT 2s first, since i know that if i revise thorougly i can get 3 x 800 - 2c, physics, chem

Any advice please. I've already set my mind to good schools, and I would be very dissapointed if i cant transfer out, as I am rejected on freshman admission.

I don't think a lot is known about transfers except that there aren't a lot of them and they are EXTREMELY driven individuals (this has been my personal experience from getting to know some of them). I really have no idea about the other schools you named, cause I didn't really look into them at all, and I definitely wasn't thinking about transferring to any of them. I'll do a little research this afternoon and see what I can dig up about transfer admissions to Mudd. Don't eliminate the possibility of staying at Clarkson, though... If you can do well there, it might not be such a bad place after all.

i believe there are 3-5 transfers a year...or at least that is what it was this year. with that said, i'd imagine it is very difficult.

don't let that get you down though. if you prove your proficiency at another school, you have a shot... not a great shot but a shot.

from what i hear, clarkson is a very good school. i personally have not done my research on that school but i know it is up there.

u mich has an excellent engineering program. it really is a great program. if you get in, i'd suggest you go. they have a lot of great things going on at umich and engineering is one of them.

i'll get back to you about others in a bit...i've got a vistor.

Ok, this is what I could find on transfers. The first number is the number of transfers from the Claremont Colleges, and the second number is the total amount of transfers. As you can see, there's quite a bit of variability, and I have no idea what their stats are:

2005: 1/4
2004: 2/5
2003: 3/7
2002: 3/11
2001: 1/5
2000: ?/4
1999: ?/9

I say don't worry about it too much. Do well wherever you go, and if you don't love it there, you can apply for a transfer. I also noticed on the website that it says something about reactivating the old application if you apply a second time, so you may want to look into that and see what it means.

DECISION: ACCEPTED!!!

How do I get RJ from Brandeis?

Hello, rocket and everyone!

I'm happy to inform you that I was accepted to Harvard today, but sad to let you know that this means I'm definitely enrolling there. This means I'll be turning down HMC. (I hadn't realized when I was applying to schools just what it would feel like to turn down schools- especially schools as fascinating as Harvey Mudd, Caltech, and Columbia.)

Thanks so much to everyone who helped answer my questions!

sounds good admiral!
congrats on all of that and best wishes for you in the future!

take care,
graham
