Accepted RD for 2010

dnc, hmc only takes ap credit for specific courses. "credit" is only awarded with 5's in: Calc BC, Physics C (with a test at mudd), Comp Sci, and i think that is it. everyone has taken ap classes and gotten 5's on nearly everything (or everything), so everyone is at least at a certain level.

AP's might get you to mudd, but they will not get you credit for many classes.

sports at hmc- we have a collective team with CMC and Scripps. it is called CMS. those teams are generally pretty good and compete against other colleges (not claremont). we also have IM sports, which are just for fun. those are dorm teams that compete agains different dorms and different claremont schools.

guy to girl ratio.... 63/37
that is why there is an all girl's college across the street...which adds 1000 women to the scene.

ok thanks for the info, rocketDA! I knew that Pomona and Pitzer had a competitive team, but I was curious about what happened to the last three schools :P. And yea, Scripps seems like a pretty nice school as well, though I only applied there out of fear I'd get rejected from HMC. I plan to visit both this weekend.

be warned....scripps and pomona are incredibly beautiful campuses....

Why does this hold an ominous tone? And how exciting--I'll be spending one night at Pomona with my ex-boyfriend. I might just fall in love with THAT school over HMC.

rocketDA-From the way you have described Harvey Mudd, it seems very similar to my experience at MIT. I'll be attending the Admitted Student Program...I hope I love it equally as much.

chalk, i agree. personally, my sleep schedule sounds a bit like rocketDA's, but i know plenty of people (in pretty much all the majors) who sleep a lot more than that. and i really only get that little sleep cause i like being up really late (as evidenced by the fact that I'm posting this at 2:30 AM). i really could have gone to sleep hours ago, but why would i do that? hehe.

Ok, I'm kinda concerned about putting this up, because we've gotten negative comments from rocketDA and whomever forsaken quoted recently, but I feel like this is a pretty accurate description of my experience at Mudd when I'm in my cynical "this is a waste of time" mood:

"I go to a school so difficult it kills your soul, and you have to spend 4 years with such a small group of people that you'll likely be sick of them all by the end, but your soul will be gone, so it wont really matter, and in the end, you'll be smarter than everyone else, but you'll have no clue because you spent the last 4 years getting grades that said you knew nothing about your classes... and yet I won't give up. I'm gonna stick it out, for better or for worse."

At the same time, there are things I really love about this school. I, too, considered transferring, and didn't apply because I missed the deadlines. This semester (2nd semester sophomore year) has been better than the last 2 (the first one was a breeze). I'm starting to believe the people who say it gets better after core. And speaking of core, I disagree with the people who say it's useless. I use it all the time, even the physics -- gasp (I'm a biochem major). I like having the background knowledge in those subjects, even if the classes DID kill my gpa.

Some of the things said by the person that forsaken quoted are quite true. I can't comment on the "myths" cause I'm still at the school, so I don't have any firsthand experience with the "life after Mudd" issues, but I have a hunch the person may be right about those. Also, Facilities and Maintenance is pretty crappy. The dorm I'm living in currently got "deep cleaned" last summer, and somehow that caused my room to have about a bajillion things wrong with it when I arrived, and it took far too long to get them fixed (some never were). There are obnoxious people, but I think that probably happens anywhere you go. At any rate, it's better than high school.

There are also things I disagree with. As I already mentioned, I think core is useful. I have never had a problem with Campus Security (which is officially Campus Safety, but everyone calls them CampSec), but I've heard of others who have -- though complaints have been filed and supposedly that's improving. I'm also not sure who the person is referring to in terms of "administration" but I've found the deans, for example, to be very understanding and helpful. From petitioning to drop a class last minute to having to get an extension on an exam thanks to mono, the deans have been a great help to me.

This school is hard. It stresses people out. But people survive it. And there are some really amazing people here. If you don't think you can handle it, don't come here, cause it can cause major mental and emotional damage. But if you think you can handle the challenge that could potentially be the most difficult 4 years of your life, then join us. We'll help you get through it, I promise.

Oooh, and I just thought of something. It was mentioned somewhere about how having TA's teach recitation sections is useful 'cause they're more likely to be able to answer specific homework questions, and I wanted to point out that we have a great system of student tutors for each of the core classes as well as all engineering classes to fulfill that role so that if you need help, you can get it. Plus, profs always have office hours that you can go to for assistance, and they're more than willing to set up weekly meetings or any other regular schedule that will best help you understand the material.

Okay. There are two things keeping me from going to Mudd. The first one: the difficulty. I know Mudd is very rigorous, and I would expect no less from a top-ranked institution. The thing is, I'm just your average high school student. I've done no research whatsoever. I haven't been to any summer programs. I don't have extraordinary extracurriculars. I'm just normal, so I am seriously doubting whether or not Mudd is a good choice for me. Honestly, I think Mudd would **** me up, but my next choice school is a joke compared to Mudd, and I don't want to limit my "potential."

Secondly, Harvey Mudd isn't a college that rings a bell in the average guy's mind. It's kind of like someone saying, "I went to Pomona College." Nearly everyone would automatically think "Cal Poly Pomona." I think something similar would happen with Mudd. It might not have such a great impact on grad schools, because most likely the adcoms have heard of the school. However, employers probably won't know, except for those with connections to Mudd. So once they see a GPA that's lower than 3.0 from a school they've never heard of, you're screwed.

I really want to go to Mudd. From everyone's comments, Mudd seems like a fun and challenging place. It's so close to home, too. I honestly can't decide. This is probably the toughest decision I've had to make, so I hope you guys can understand when I keep bringing up these negative comments.

forsaken, yeah, i completely understand and your concern is completely legit.

everything you say has a degree of truth. all i have to say is this:

if you can find it in you to accept this challenge... you should. great challenges come rarely; carpe diem.

Forsaken, you and I are in the exact same boat! I'm really just average too, plus I'm an Asian which to my parents means I should live by higher standards for education. I'm pretty sure the only reason I got into HMC since I have mediocre grades and iffy test scores is because I'm a girl.

oh I forgot to say that we're alike because I can't tell if I'm ready for all the hard work, versus a more partying-esque school like USC, and b/c I'm worried that ppl won't know where HMC is when I go to get a job. Then again, whenever I tell ppl in MO that I'm going to California this weekend, they ask me if I'm going to the city or the state. Shows you how uneducated we hicks are.

The average person might not know Harvey Mudd, but I doubt the same is true with businesses or grad schools.. I honestly think that is a CC myth.

CC= College Confidential

CC? blah blah blah I need 10 chars.

college confidential

Forsaken and dncrditzx22:
I was pretty normal as a high school student, too. I didn't do summer research, I didn't have some unique and super-nerdy hobby, I wasn't even on very many clubs. I was just a regular student. My extracurriculars were swimming and band, which I had done forever, but most mudders have done music at some point (and I wasn't one of those amazing musicians like some people), and many have also been on sports teams. My nerdiest extracurricular was the tutor club, which I wasn't super dedicated to. Let's put it this way: the admissions officers are pretty good at their job. They wouldn't have accepted you if they didn't think you had a satisfactory background to handle the workload. That said, it won't be easy, and you better make sure you have the right mindset -- it took me a little too long to figure out how important it is, and by then I had developed some bad habits that I'm only now beginning to get over. Don't make your decision because you think you're too normal. Base your decision on whether or not you think you want a challenge like this for the next four years, and don't second guess your abilities.

i agree with radioactivelead.

hmm well that's making me feel a bit more optimistic. I've been psycho-crazy with extracurriculars through high school, and I'm pretty big into sports. Speaking of which, I've already looked into HMC's T&F team a bit (prob. gonna go for intermural, not collegiate), but do the 5C's have any competitive dance teams (like poms in high school) or cheerleading squads? I get the feeling they don't, but that's just me being naive and ignorant.

radioactivelead is correct, but keep in mind that there are some crazy mo-fo's here as well.

i don't think cheerleading... but i know that we have a really amazing pop dance team. they are actually pretty hot girls and are pretty darn spectacular. (i think that is only mudd though)

like you, you mean? :P j/k!!
I find it funny that you change everybody's sn.
like calling me "dnc" and For5aken "forsaken" (I made that mistake too though) and radioactivepb "radioactivelead". It's amusing.
btw, the dnc of my sn is part of "dncr" as in dancer. But it's cool too :P
