Accepted Students Audition Material

It would be great if any accepted students would post what they used as their audition songs and monologues

I know this is a question that everyone wants to have answered, but I always hesitate to share that about my students for the reason that it's SO specific to each of them - their voices, looks, acting energies and skills, etc.. I know that is common sense to many but not to all, especially to students who are desperately searching for the "perfect" pieces. MUCH more importantly, several of the most talented students I know who are currently at UM sang what would be considered "terrible" audition pieces. In fact, during their orientation, they sit down in a circle with Brent Wagner, the department head, and go around and say what they each sang, and the kids good-naturedly joke about how unaware some of them were at the time - so those choices are NOT always good guides to material, even for preliminary ideas and directions for seeking. My favorite story about is that of the young man who just played Horton is UM's SEUSSICAL, a current junior, who didn't know a lot about MT rep and therefore sang "Kids" from BYE, BYE BIRDIE - which is almost a SPEAK-sing type of song!!! - and something else equally "not good" (which I can't remember off the top of my head). He has a HUUUUUUGE, GORGEOUS operatic tenor voice, and did then, too - but his material did NOT show that off. So for every piece of info you get that demonstrates a "great" choice, you are likely to hear a story like that. Similarly, a good friend of mine, a REALLY tall, statuesque woman with a HUGE legit voice, sang "I Feel Pretty" for her CMU audition a few years ago. (She's a fairly recent grad.) When she entered the school her freshman year, one of the first things her voice teacher said to her was, "You will NEVER sing that at an audition again!" ;) It just was not suited to her, but they heard a great voice in spite of that.

That having been said, I, too, am always curious to hear what people sang - it's just NOT a good guideline for choosing material for any school or choosing material in general!
