I noticed on the accepted students days that they seem well set up for a parent to go along (although obviously not stay overnight on campus). I was assuming I would not go along on any accepted students weekend at any college, but I don't think my D would care if I did go if it is truly set up to include parents. Did any parents go on their student's accepted days visit in the past?

I went with S1 to Caltech prefrosh weekend (and stayed in a room a few blocks from campus). They encouraged parents to come along and attend some sessions but the kids and parents did not see each other until it was time to leave. I would imagine Chicago would be similar.

Hi Intparent,

First, congrats on your D’s admission to U Chicago! It was my S’s first choice last year so by April, even though he had by then other admissions in hand, he knew he was going to enroll there. Nevertheless, he wanted to experience Admitted Students days, especially the overnight, and I asked if I could go with him so I could see where he would be for the next four years. If you can afford the time and the cost, go! I’m sure all schools put on their best faces, and Chicago was no exception. The programs are informative, many geared just to the parents, and I just found it a real comfort to get a sense of where my S’s new home would be (Chicago is about 800 miles from our home). So, really, no reason you have to attend, but plenty of good reasons to enjoy the visit.

My S just finished his first quarter at U Chicago and loves it. If I can answer any questions you might have, please PM me.

H and I both went with S. (It was a good excuse to see some friends in Chicago, too) It looked like the majority of students had parents there and I was glad I went.

Thanks for the input! I went ahead and booked flights for both of us, found a hotel for me, etc. We love Chicago anyway (live a short flight away), and I have been to the campus a few times, including campus visits for both kids. D1 was intimidated by the serious intellectual vibe, but D2 (just admitted) was with us six years ago on our first visit, and she loved it even then. We visited again last year. Even though I have been to campus, the accepted student program looks interesting, and I think D2 may not be decided for sure whether to attend in mid-April depending on RD acceptances.

Intparent, don’t miss the model class lectures. They were fantastic!
