Accepted Students...please read

I'm a current Emory student. For those of you accepted to Emory and considering enrolling (especially those attending this April Open House!), please read below a copy of an email sent out to all current Emory students.

I understand this is a powerplay in the game of admissions, but the results of this are misleading for accepted students. There are a lot of positive aspects to this school, but I think it's pathetic that students are asked make a false display of school spirit (of which there is actually very little).

Just wanted to disseminate this information for all of y'all making the touch choice of where you want to be for the next 4 years.

Hello Emory Undergraduates!

Thank you to those of you who welcomed our visiting admitted students last Friday. Tomorrow, Monday, is another April Open House.

Please welcome these admitted students and their families. There will be a special Wonderful Wednesday (Magical Monday!) and you will receive free food if you are wearing an Emory shirt. This is a great example:

Or any other shirts that have Emory on them, like OEO Shirts, OL Shirts, Football Shirts, etc.

Once again when you wear Emory shirts, I can promise good things will come your way...

***any mention of rewards is not to be taken seriously

Point is, the administration is up on the fact that Emory students lack school pride. Most incoming students/prospectives know about this already, and take it into consideration. Many of them enroll despite that, because the education is worth it, and the students aren’t that bad. Seriously, was this necessary?

Congratz, you may have just repelled some of the best and brightest from your school (and my future school). I hope you are happy with yourself and I also hope that not all Emory students are as klutzy and stupid as you are.

I would also like to make this a bit more personal and say that you probably are one of the bad eggs of any university :). Kthxbai

Actually, I don’t know if I see that much of a problem with this. It’s possible that other non-Ivy peers do similar things. It is unnecessary though, Emory shirts/gear or no gear, many will like the school. It’s freaking spring (so the campus looks amazing), and the students will get exposure to the campus at its liveliest. Not to mention that lots of prospective students also really wanted to attend other peer institutions/ivies and therefore won’t be that put off or shocked about the non-Emory gear, as they probably plan to wear it themselves. And then there is the fact that many will wear institution-neutral clothing because of the season (women wearing their spring dresses/skirts and stuff).

And honestly, hardly no one reads these letters. And those who do, really care less about the content. Ever since these e-mails have been sent out, I have not seen a significant increase in the amount of Emory gear worn. With that said, a substantial amount already wear it.

Emory students have no problem wearing there Emory apparel-- it’s not at all hard to find students toting Emory sweatshirts, tees, shorts, lanyards, hats, etc.

Emory doesn’t lack community. What it does lack to an extent is school spirit when it comes to athletic events, which are poorly attended. But that’s because Emory has D3 sports. Emory has continued to have D3 sports (when it clearly has the money and size to support D1 programs) because it decided to place academics before athletics. Let the record show that Emory has the most academic all-american athletes than any D1, D2, or D3 school.

This was actually a selling point to my son as he “did not want to be around a bunch of dumb jocks”. Note, my son is quite athletic and placed 4th in the state in high school tennis. He simply wanted the money and emphasis to be placed upon academics. Emory has their priorities in the correct order.

He loves Emory and is a tour guide. However, he only wears Emory gear when he is not on campus.

e2014ry, I so agree with you. Some current Emory students(as in the OP) piszzzzz me off so much… your school is asking you to show some pride… suck it up and do it. If you don’t do it, then don’t complain that Emory is lacking pride because you are contributing to that. Gonna try my best to make class of 2014 different.

Ha the funny thing is that I think Sherman is clearly wrong. They clearly must not have come out of their room during Dooley’s Week, Fall Band Party, Songfest, Homecoming, or any of the other huge events our SPC throws for us. Emory may not have pride in the sense of rallying behind a football team, but most everyone takes pride in the school itself which is clearly seen during the events above.

as one of “last friday’s” accepted student visitors, i found emory to have a different kind of spirit. where else is there dooley’s week and a school mascot who runs around outside of the football stadium at different points in the year? that’s school spirit, and its better than the sports spirit at the ivy im considering. I loved emory, whether the kids were wearing stuff with the name on it or not.

I honestly don’t have a problem with this e-mail. I go to a private high school and when we have special open houses, they tell us to make sure we come to school looking great that day (and for those who don’t…well…lol). But it’s not like we don’t have school spirit, in fact, we might have to much. Our student section for basketball is notorious for going crazy at games!

I…Don’t…Care.

is this supposed to be some kind of scandal? i only took it to mean that the university wanted us to play a positive role in encouraging students to come to emory. by wearing a shirt you’re only showing support for the school. please grow up.

I think it is a fact that the school puts on a bit of a “front” when admitted students are around. One thing Ive really noticed is that our food gets A LOT better on days lots of admitted students are here. I think this happens at a lot of schools, but you guys shouldnt be so harsh to sherman, he was just spreading the word. I think it is good for visiting students to know that DUC food is not always this good and that we arent a school known for high levels of school spirit. Sure, we have lots of cool “SPC events” but there is not really a common bond among students here. Its not just a lack of big time sports, its a lack of commonality between students. Its not everyone’s experience… but Emory can be a cliquey place at times. I love this school and hope you do too. Dont blame him for spreading the word…

^The food… Lots of guide books say it sucks. So, yeah.

pandab, you dont even know how many times Ive heard Emory has no school spirit… it gets annoying… if schools that are far, far inferior in every single way can have school spirit, the problem is not Emory, its the current students… and when Emory tries to increase school spirit with emails like this, it gets bashed.
