Accepted to Plan ii; odds of getting in to LAH?

I’m planning to study English at UT. I applied to bot LAH and Plan ii, mostly because they were the same application, but I really only care about LAH. I know that Plan ii is more prestigious, but I’m looking to take as many English classes and as few math and science classes as possible, and in that regard LAH is a much better fit for me. I didn’t really expect to get in to Plan ii anyways - I was given the impression that its admissions standards were far higher than LAH’s.

It came as a complete surprise to me, then, when Plan ii sent me an acceptance letter a couple weeks ago. It’s even more surprising - and a little nerve racking - that Plan ii has gotten back to me, while LAH still hasn’t. I know that LAH admissions go through February, but I can’t help but be scared by the fact that I missed the first couple rounds of acceptances.

I have high test scores (32 on ACT, with 34 on the English section), a decent GPA (3.75 UW, 3.9 W), and a poor class rank (80 out of 220). I’m a National Merit Semi-Finalist, which I think is honestly the only reason Plan ii admitted me. My essays were pretty good, I guess, but they depicted me as more of an “LAH type” (intense focus in one area) than a “Plan ii type” (studying a wide variety of subjects).

My question is this: if I’ve been accepted to Plan ii, is it safe for me to assume that I’ll get in to LAH as well? Any idea why Plan ii has accepted me while LAH still hasn’t?

Also, if I’m not accepted to LAH, should I join Plan ii? Even if I don’t really want to take math and science courses?

@lovingllama As you stated Plan II is more prestigious than LAH, and while not 100%, generally P2 kids get into LAH too. IMO P2 is well worth the math and science “price”. Tons of P2 English majors have succeed in those classes. They round you out, challenge you and will provide excellent essay material.

In P2 you write and write, you have exposure to great minds, interesting peers, and the best professors UT has to offer. You should read up more on it, or do what my son did and sit in on an English class, before you decline. P2 is a great opportunity.

Cheers,
Psy

I agree 100% with what psywar said. My daughter is currently in P2, and chose P2 over LAH. she’s only one semester through but she loves P2 and loves UT. As psywar indicated, you need to do your own research. I’m pretty sure that there is a ton of information on UT’s website explaining the differences between P2 and LAH at UT. I believe there is also a CC thread about this same issue. When I attended parents orientation last August with other LA parents, the administrators referred to P2 as “Little Harvard.” I think they were trying to be complementary. Whatever you decide, good luck.
