When I applied to Michigan, I checked the "check here if you would like to be considered for the residential college" box. I was accepted to Michigan yesterday; have I been accepted into the residential college? Also, would I possibly be able to be in both the RC and the honors program? Can I still be considered for honors if I checked the RC box?

I also checked the RC box, not knowing what it was. It sounded like the Honors college and after I got accepted, I found out what RC was. I believe that you can be accepted to both the RC and Honors college, because the RC is more a residential thing and Honors is more coursework. I think that this is explained in the package that you'll recieve from UM in a few days.

YAY FOR NEW RC/HONORS BUDDIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is MORE than possible to be in both honors and the RC. I'm living proof...haha. If you have any questions regarding how the two programs interact...feel free to ask on here or IM. I'm more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

They are both good programs, although I tend to prefer the RC to honors a little bit. I can give a little more info about the RC than honors..but chibears is really good for honors info.

I actually left the RC box unchecked when I was going through the application. When I read about it, it gave me the impression that it was more for the arts/humanities students more so than the science people (me). Am I going to regret not checking the little box?

Please clear up any misconceptions that I may still have! Thanks

P.S.- I left it unchecked because I thought it was binding, and I didn't want to be obligated to something I may not enjoy!

No...and I hope that everyperson understands this. The RC is NOT binding, and you may join or drop at will.

The RC is def. centered around the humanities and creative writing. But that is not the only aspect. I joined b/c i wanted the residential environment, and i wanted intensive language. Also, the RC natual science classes are pretty cool. People have differant reasons for being in the RC...and its not all artsy-fartsy stuff.

kb54010, I'm interested. What do you guys do in the residence halls that reflects the language stuff? Do you get in debates over existentialism at nights? Or is the liberal arts confined to the classes?

Manguo....I really can't answer that 1st question b/c I didn't take intensive 1st semester. But I can describe the housing situation in general. Now...East Quad is not the modern-day Agora, but the intellectual atmosphere here surpasses that of any other dorm. Discussion about issues, be they philosophic or otherwise, happen frequently, as long as you're w/ people that are interested in the subject. I don't find existentialism particularly intersting...so I've never found myself talking about it. However, whenever I'm around people who are interested in politics, the discussion is spontaneus, engaging, and lasts longer than what's probably good for us. The key is finding RC students that are interested in w/e you're interested in. This is easy, considering that RC students tend to have a wide range of interests, reflected in the interdisiplinary nature of the courses.

The RC, in addition to having an intellectual atmosphere, is the most "neighborly" of the housing options available to freshmen. I swear to God there are people on the Hill who have never SEEN, much less met thier neighboors. In my hall, everybody knows everybody, and the sense of community is strong.

To answer your question concisely, classwork regularly spills over into residential life, but while its possible for it to fall in your lap, it may not. This isn't a lack of intellectual vibrancy, but a reflection of the wide interests of RC students. Because we're all here united by our academic program, there is a sense of community that is NOT replicated anywhere on campus (with the possible exception of some MLC's like martha cook).

*Note...the intellectual atmosphere of East Quad is likely to grow even more engaging next year, when housing kicks all the regular kids out. WISE and MRC are moving here...so the entire building will be either RC, WISE, or MRC. Things are gonna get even better.
