Accepted to UC Berkeley with a 22 ACT score!!

I would like to know who else got into UC Berkeley with low test scores or GPA. I'm still in shock because I never thought about getting into UC Berkeley with my extremely low test scores. Also, I got in for fall, no supplemental questionnaire, and as a political science major!!!. I'm very grateful for this opportunity:)

Please don’t feed him.

what???

This is not a joke and I’m not trying to be rude or anything like that. Many people in CC say that having less that a 25ACT will not get you into UC Berkeley. I’m really amazed i just want to know who else got in despite having terrible test scores

I know someone with a 1610 sat score.

Are you from an underprivileged poor background? URM? I had a hispanic friend who bombed the SAT with a 1480. I’m not even joking. But she was from an extremely poor background and went to one of the worst high schools in California. She worked hard though, and did okay as a IB major (I think she got maybe 2.9 or 3.0 gpa, something like that at the end)

yes, I’m Mexican, First generation college student, low income. Now that i think about it maybe the reason i got in was because of my GPA (4.33). Also, i took 11 AP Courses (only student at my school who took every single AP course), i was extremely involved at school, 200+ community service hours, i won regional and national competitions for ballet folklorico. Finally, i didn’t know how to speak English in freshman year. My school is in program improvement since 2004

^That explains it.

I wouldn’t recommend you going around telling people your ACT score. People may assume you got in unfairly because of your race/background (since many poor Asians with high stats are denied admissions).

Also remember that Berkeley is a much harder school than low/mediocre performing high schools. People that went to the elite high schools seemed to do fine at Berkeley, but people who went to lesser high schools, despite of how good their grades were (because getting A’s was probably not as difficult in a low performing high school), seemed to struggle at first.

Thanks and sorry if my comments were rude, my purpose was to tell other students who believe that because getting a low ACT score means automatically rejection that is not true. Even at low performing schools you will find smart people. I believe I’m fully prepare for the challenge,i worked so hard throughout high school that I’m not scare for the competition:).

If everything you said in your above post is true, you deserve to go to Berkeley. It’s very hard to just get lost in the unmotivational atmosphere in an under performing area and make a lot of poor choices that you’ll regret later. Great job on your accomplishments and I’m sure you are a very bright student. Something tells me though that if you just invested $15 in a practice book you would get at least ~28. Obviously you didn’t need it though but just saying.

If you don’t know a single word of English at your freshmen year of HS…then it is more than impressive.

But I think by “don’t know how to speak English”, you mean you don’t know much word of it, academically.

No offense, but I don’t believe someone doesn’t even know the alphabets at its freshmen year will end up with a 4.33 and taken 11 AP classes, unless you are declaring that you are a genius.

I myself is a Chinese, who came to U.S at my freshmen year, and only have a “common” level of knowledge in English. (How are you? How do you do? Basic grammar such as past tense, present tense, etc), and I end up with 12 AP courses and 2180 SAT.

Based on what you’ve said, I think mentioning your difficulty of language barrier really earns you a lot of credit toward your admission.
Anyways, you are still one of the lucky guy! Enjoy!

Btw, anyone into the college of Chemistry? what to find a roommate lol.

Harvard accepts students with very low SATs and / or GPA. According to the school data, 1 percent of the students they admit have SATs below 2000.

Yeah they are called athletes

g0ld3n@ Thank you for your post and actually i invested $15 in a practice book that’s why i got a 22. My original score was an eighteen. The valedictorian at my school got a 26.

dodosteve@ actually the only thing i knew in English was the alphabet and that’s it. In Mexico, they don’t really teach you English. Also, there’s an explanation for my 4.33 GPA and my 11 AP courses (Determination!!!)

GPA (UW,W): UW: 3.93, W: 4.2
SATI: 1650
SATII: chem: 530, MathII: 540
ACT:22
AP: chem: 1, Language composition: 2

had a 2.9 gpa freshman year weighted, and 2.5 unweighted…
had D+ freshman year…

got supplement, and accepted because of it…!!! suprised??? i know!! me too!!!

FYI, Berkeley does not take into account race for admissions purposes.

hockeykid- you totally just made me laugh out loud.

^ But it greatly takes into account personal hardship. Greatly.

just my own opinion, how is it that you have a 4.33 gpa, 11 AP classes, and wind up with a 22 ACT? Unless you are an AWFUL test taker, there has to be some serious grade inflation here (considering the valedictorian has only a 26 ACT…)

any which way, congratuations, it’s an outstanding feat

I got accepted too!! 21 ACT score… and 1560 SAT
