Accepted to UCB, UCD, UCSD, UCI - AMA

Ranroid: do you mean the pre reqs or your major listed on assist? What was your gpa?

@randroid, No one really knows how UC’s treat missing reqs. Many people are under the impression that certain schools will not admit you if your missing lower divs, but every year I see examples where students are missing courses, and still get admitted to top UC’s. I’m sure there’s some exceptions for some schools in regards to impacted majors, where students will need to complete lower divs to be competitive.

@DeadSupra, I did apply to UCLA but was not accepted. Applied to 5 UC’s and was accepted to 4.

@Cokelly Wow you really didn’t have to do that…

it is 8 from brain

you need to work on basic math lol

Whoops I meant the LD major requirements on Assist. My GPA was a 3.30 by the end of Fall 2011.

@gettinthatfosho
UCLA was really the only school that I wanted to apply to, but I figured that I needed a safety net.

Although a UC may accept you with missing pre reqs, you will have to complete them at the university. All this means tho is that you will not graduate within 2 years after transfer.

Dang, I better buckle down and get as much done as I possibly can then.

how do you evaluate your
cGPA and mGPA
How exactly do you know what classes effect your mGPA and which is more important?
I am Majoring in similar majors and i was wondering what your average Unit load was to keep your GPA high.

@BigDreamsKid
How long have you been at ur CCC and what is your major(s)?
Your best bet is to put in for an official transcript (especially if you have been at your CCC for a while) or check your CCC online system that should allow you to check your grades and it should tell you your GPA.
your cGPA is basically your overall UC transferable GPA, this will kind of dictate which UCs you have the chance to get into depending on your major…
your mGPA is your major GPA. So lets say you’re a psych major, you want to have as many A’s as possible in your psych classes, maybe a B, but C’s and lower can be problematic.
If you’re looking to apply to an impacted major or hard to get into program like UCB’s Hass school of business this would require a 3.8+ to be a competitive applicant and that is with all of your admission requirements done. (look at the footnote at the bottom of the page) [Class Profile, Undergraduate Program, Berkeley-Haas](<a href=“Class Profile - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas”>Class Profile - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas)
But if you are a Math Major you might be able to get into UCLA with a 3.4
It really depends on your major.
Personally, I finished up at PCC in 2years and took (15,16.3units) year one (14,11units) year two with 4units over one summer and took winter sessions off. I ended up with a total of 60 units exactly and only took UC transferable classes to avoid any confusion when it came to evaluating my transcript. In that time I finished pre-reqs for both History and Anthro, earning 2AAs in humanities, as well as behavioral and social sciences, and i’m one class short of a 3rd in Natual Sciences. My overall GPA was a 3.7 and I still had time to be VP of Anthro Club and work 30+hrs a week, My major GPA in history was a 4.0 and in anthro a 3.8

Oh and I think Cokelly was trolling, lol. Why would a perspective math major w// that high of a GPA & SAT score need to do that. And why would anyone post that on a forum when they could.just do it on a piece of paper lol.

I followed UCI mech eng lower div requirements and got accepted to ucsd first, ironically

Well that’s good! Congratulations what school will you be going to then?

UCSD, always loved the area, and have several network connections there as well. Looking at my high school transcript i would have NEVER gotten in… So im quite excited to study, perform, and learn well!

My proposed major is Neuroscience or Nuerobiology, depending on the school. This upcoming year well be my third year at a community college.

OP, what are your thoughts on Rampart and Gaben?

@PoliEcon, no idea who those guys were, did a quick google search and found something on reddit, guess one is a game creator? lol no clue sorry!

@kamelred

I applied to essentially the same majors as you did and I was just wondering what your top choices were when you applied. I’m assuming UC Berkeley was your top choice because you SIRed there, but I’m just curious how schools like UCLA, UCSD, etc ranked for you. And what you liked and disliked about the schools, specifically their departments?

My top 3 were:

 1. UC Berkeley Integrative Biology
 2. UCSD Molecular Biology
 3. UCLA Molecular, Cell, and Development Biology

I didn’t get into Berkeley, so I ultimately SIRed to UCSD, but I like UCLA as well. Ultimately I choose UCSD because I felt like there were more research opportunities and that the Biology department was more organized and had more resources than at UCLA. I did thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere at UCLA though when I visited and would have loved living and going to school in Westwood.

@dilapidatedmind, congrats on UCSD!

As to your question I would say my rankings were as follows:

Cal

UCLA

UCSD

UCD

UCI

I already explained why I chose Cal so I’m going to skip #1.

UCLA: I ranked UCLA second because of their neuroscience major. I’ve had an interest in this field ever since taking anatomy/physiology, and I liked the fact that I could major specifically in it. I also know a professor there that I could do research with.

UCSD: After the initial admission decisions were released (Before Cal) I was planning on attending UCSD. I was first interested in UCSD when I read about their discovery of GFP (Green fluroescent protein) that earned one of their faculty (and others around the US) the nobel prize in chemistry a few years back. Being primarily a research university I also think that the research opportunities are vast at UCSD. I’ve also heard that it’s a very “quiet” campus, meaning that not much really goes on unless you actively seek something to do. Whether this a good or bad thing I’m still unsure.

UCD: Davis is unique with their animal biology/sciences majors. I’m interested in veterinary medicine and was contemplating whether or not I could fulfill the heavy requirements of vet school. I decided I wouldn’t be able to be a competitive candidate for their vet school and therefore decided not to attend.

UCI: Really just a backup school. I knew that if I was admitted to any school above I would probably not attend UCI. I have lots of friends that go here but I really wanted a change of scenery.

The truth is there’s a lot of great schools in California, and it really comes down to picking the UC that you will enjoy the most in areas such as: major program, opportunity, location. We are quite spoiled in California since we have so many good schools.
