Accepted to WPI

based on this page:
[Undergraduate Admissions: WPI Merit Scholarship Overview - WPI](http://www.wpi.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/merits.html)

I cannot see any merit scholarships bigger than 25k. Where did you read about full tuition merit scholarships?

@FreedomOverdose

I go to this school and there are a few (3 students I know) who have full ride awards. I believe that they are very competitive and few are given out each year. The awards are Trustees’ Scholarship, Foisie Scholarship. Foisie Scholarship also includes a one-time $5k grant for doing projects abroad. Also, it mentions that awards vary but typically range from $10000 and $25000. So $25k is the maximum that is typically awarded but it is conceivable that in very few cases, they may award more.

For details on the Foisie scholarship, read this page:
[Undergraduate Admissions: Foisie Scholars Program - WPI](http://www.wpi.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/foisie.html)

In any case, congratulations on getting one of WPI’s highest merit amounts. You may even pay less depending on how much additional need-based grants you get. I am sure that if you search around you can get some external scholarships as well that may bring down the amount you need to pay even further.

I was offered a Foisie scholarship. So excited, will probably attend. I applied EAI and was contacted in December about my award. The admissions officer called to tell me the good news. I thought that was a nice touch. Stats are:
ACT:34 Math2 800 Bio 790 Weighted average 106% Lots of science/math ECs and volunteer hours. 10 AP classes.

Gee, needinfo2011 I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into MIT or something. o.O

As I posted on another thread, I received a $25,000 renewable scholarship (Marshall/Chavez/Means Scholarship). Is it possible to receive more than one merit scholarship?

Any international received a need based financial aid notification yet ???

@tushargupta
Yes, I got my acceptance letter (by email) yesterday. They couldn’t provide me need-based financial aid. But they’ve awarded me the Presidential Scholarship. $33,000 USD per annum for four years!! That makes it $132,000 USD in all! :)

I’m an international student. I got a presidential scholarship worth $19.000 and an international scholarship of $11,000. So thats $30,000 total. :)

I’ve been awarded $34,200 in total. $28,500 from the Marshall/Chavez/Means Scholarship and another 5,700 from the WPI Scholarship.

I was accepted for the early action II round!
I have a 94.5 unweighted gpa (but I have taken 6 aps), 700 for the biology satII and a 28 act. I am very involved in extracurriculars and volunteering (i.e. key club president, varsity crew, etc.).

I am deciding between CASE Western Reserve University, Clarkson University, and WPI. I am completely torn between all three. I need help deciding! (I am going to double major in biology and math. I plan on going to med school, but i won’t declare premed).

For pre-med, Case Western has a much stronger, well-known program. Also,they have their own medical school and teaching hospital! It’s a pretty competitive academic environment, but there are obviously tons of opportunities for research and internships.

The choice is less obvious for other majors though. My son is likely to reject Case (with a scholarship) for WPI.

I was unaware that Case was as competitive and offered so many opportunities (mainly because of it’s high acceptance rate). If you know, what reasons would your son choose WPI over Case? I received scholorships from all three schools, so I am trying to exclude money from the decision process.

peglaphant… better check on the WPI scholarship. I think it may be need based and not guaranteed for 4 yrs like the other scholarship.

My opinion is that WPI is overall a better engineering school except perhaps for bioengineering, especially at the undergrad level. WPI is not quite as good for non-engineering as the math and science departments are mostly there as support for the engineering departments. Computer science at WPI is decent. Case Western is also a great school.

The atmospheres are very different at the two schools. WPI is much smaller and focused on undergrad education with good graduate programs in some fields. Both are “tech” schools though Case has much more comprehensive offerings and has combined medical programs. Both can offer a great education. Think about where you want to possibly spend the next four years of your life.

I would like to receive my D.O. as well as a PhD before going on to join the Doctors Without Borders organization. I am very involved in many extracurriculars and am more focused on the holistic aspects of medicine and alternative therapy. I adore the idea of a small, red brick school that WPI offers, but I am worried that the techy environment may squash my desire for social service. At the same time, I feel as if my community service may have a greater impact on a smaller campus (WPI is also installing a rowing tank, which is a plus!).

Case has a techy environment, too, but because it is in Cleveland, there are significant opportunities for service. Case has an entire department, called the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning (CCEL), that is dedicated to providing students with significant opportunities to help the community. There is also a Saturday of Service every year, where the majority of Case students sign up to volunteer at places like MedWish (a small non-profit that collects unused medical supplies from nearby hospitals and sorts them, then sends them to needy countries), hospice centers, and the Ronald McDonald House.

There are also many community-service oriented clubs at Case that provide transportation on a very regular basis to places where students can tutor ESL students, or work at the community soup kitchen.

This is a wonderful resource for information about community service:
[About the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning - Case Center for Civic Engagement and Learning](<a href=“Division of Student Affairs | Case Western Reserve University”>Division of Student Affairs | Case Western Reserve University)

Also, all the fraternities and sororities here are REQUIRED to complete 365 days of service, which some do in the form of anything from charity dodgeball tournaments to running dinner fundraisers for the fight against domestic violence.

Case also participates in Relay for Life each year!

Wow, that is very impressive. I appreciate you helping me out and informing me of all the opportunities for service. I was worried that because Case is a larger school than WPI that it would more difficult to reach out to the community, but you have most certainly proved me wrong. I am heading out to Case this coming weekend (woohoo, a 9 hour drive!) just to be sure that this is the school for me, but as of right now I am falling in love with all that it has to offer. Thanks again!
