Accepted University of Michigan Class of 2024

This is a forum for discussions related to choosing UMich: campus days, learning communities, honors, Ross, dorms, costs, orientation, etc. And a place for new students and parents to “meet”, ask questions, and share info. However, it is open to anyone including current UMich students, alumni, and UMich parents who can offer valuable advice to those new to the UMich community.

This might be better suited on the Michigan thread which have most of this covered…

For reference, I am an alumna, mother of a current Ross student, and my current 12th grader has been accepted to the class of 2024. I’m looking forward to learning from others on this journey and sharing the experience I’ve had with my first child at UMich. However, UMich is a diverse school with thousands of different stories and experiences and I hope to learn more as I go through this process again.

First question: Are you planning to attend a Campus Day? And what do you hope to get out of it if you are?

@jayrow thanks for starting this thread! My current 12th grade son was accepted to LSA class of 2024! My husband is a UofM grad (class of 90) and his father, grandfather and great grandfather also attended / graduated. There is a huge emotional connection to UofM, but we are OOS/ California and will wait to hear from a few UC’s (and a couple of privates) for my son to make the final decision. He is attending Campus Day on March 13th. We have been to football games, visited campus informally, and had an official tour (but it was February and most students were hiding inside and of course we understood that lol). Michigan is one of his top choices and he was thrilled to be accepted in December - we are just weighing the cost difference vs. one of the top UC’s. He wont hear from those until March, so he has time to think about it. We would not qualify for any financial aid and while we are fortunate enough to be able to afford OOS tuition, it’s a lot of $ for Michigan vs. paying in state at a UCLA, UCSD or Cal (his top choices). Cost of grad school (potentially) is a consideration in all this. My hunch is he will end up choosing to attend Michigan in the end - but we just have to wait and see how this all shakes out come March / April.

@Knowsstuff

Is that just a “regular” Michigan thread? Where do I find it?

@Knowsstuff

Ok. Now I know what you mean. Yes, I did try to put it under UMich. For some reason certain universities are unable to be chosen (at least from my account.) I could have chosen from hundreds of universities, but UMich won’t let me click on it. I wondered why, so I clicked around and found I couldn’t choose other top universities, either such as MIT or Yale.

@Norcal1972

Hi and wow- your son does have a lot of emotional connections to UMich! But it sounds like he has some good possibilities in CA as well. It’s hard waiting until March/April!

@yikesyikesyikes. Do you think this should be moved to the Michigan forum to get more hits?

Back in March of 2018, we attended on a CA Admitted Student Day. 30’s during the day, 20’s at night with light snow. Dress warmly! I didn’t. Isn’t March always warm? :lol:

@knowstuff

Yup! Will have this moved.

@jayrow… It’s fixed now… The great moderators came to the rescue… Lol…

We did a Campus Visit past Summer which included general Info and a walking Campus tour. Now that we are admitted, just wondering how different the Campus Day would be from what we already did. We are instate so cost isn’t an issue ($50 registration fee is all we’d be paying) but if most of the info is repeated probably it isn’t worth it. On the otherhand, if there’s a lot of info provided aimed specifically at incoming freshmen which they may not have given in the generic Visit last Summer, probably we’d consider it. Anyone who attended both in the past or know about it, please throw some light. Thanks.

What are the dates for Campus Day ?
I don’t see see dates mentioned under the schedule .

@RaLaSrSa

I did Campus Day four years ago with my son. It was helpful for him because when we had done campus visits, he never felt the right fit. He enjoyed the student panels and also meeting some other incoming students. It made a difference for him and made it so that he was interested in UMich even if he didn’t get into Ross which was the main question for him. In the end, he got into Ross the next week, but he waited until he heard from USC to make a final decision. For us, in-state, UMich made more financial sense than USC.

Click on the yellow register tab and then enter your information. The dates will appear.

We got an email to apply for LSA scholarships (I’m sure everyone who’s admitted got it). There’s a line which says “While the final application deadline is April 1, students who apply by January 16 will be considered for Shipman and Stamps Scholarships.” DD has finals this week and is cringining at the thought of writing another 300 char essay. Are these given only to need based students or do non need based(merit) students stand any chance? Just trying to guage if it’s worth spending the effort/time at the expense of finals trying to beat the 1/16 deadline (or even the 4/1 date for that matter). Thanks.

Stickying/Pinning this thread.

Son was accepted EA. After first trimester his AP Calc teacher was adamant that he not take AP Calc the next two tris as he had received a C. Although my son was confident he could do better, he felt that if the teacher was against him continuing in he would be best served to drop it. He is now in College Algebra. Should he notify his Admissions officer of the schedule change and the C? He does NOT want his acceptance rescinded.
