Accepted with a 1.0 GPA?

Could I get into Howard University with the following criteria?

Freshman year: 1.0 GPA (my father died right before school started)
Sophomore year: 2.2465 (my mother re-married, I was depressed)
Junior year: 4.375
Senior year: 4.501

Cumulative GPA: 3.01 (weighted) 2.8 (unweighted)

ACT: 33

Mock Trial: 4 years (senior year, Captain)
French Club: 1 year
Debate Team: 1 year
Environmental Club: 3 years (senior year, Vice President)
Key Club: 3 years (senior year, Secretary)
After School Job - 4 years
Blank Park Zoo Volunteer - 4 years
Black Teen Summit: 4 years
NAACP Youth Council - 4 years (senior year, Secretary)

Over the summer: Mock Trial Camp and Summer job - both for 4 years

I want to major in Sociology and History with a French minor ..But I'm scared I'll get rejected because of my freshman and sophomore year grades.

Also, does anyone know if there are scholarships for Mock Trial?

Thanks,
SomeGirl

I think you've got a shot, expecially since your grades went up so much.

Your ACT is frickin' excellent; you definitely have a shot if you explain your circumstances.

Not to be rude or anything ..But can I please get an answer with more than "I think you've got a shot."? This really means a lot to me, and it hurts that I'm not getting answers on a callege admissions talk website.

Haha, sorry; I know nothing about chances at schools -- I just wanted to let you know that I think you look good. I'll sit back and let knowledgeable people fill you in, now. (:

Lol ..Poseur, that's fine. However, I'm still waiting for the knowledgeable people ..Where are they?

It's hard to tell because every special circumstance is unique. Since your grades under normal circumstances and ACT are stellar I think you would get in since they would be understanding.

BTW are you taking a gap year or predicting senior grades?

This. .......

Your upward trend is just ridiculous. I'd say you'd have a great shot at Howard even with your GPA. Just make sure to write an essay concerning your issue with your father's death or whatever. I'm sure they'd have much sympathy for you.
Also make sure you take the SAT I (required) and some SAT II subjects tests (recommended).

Howard University - Match

seriously mention the family issues you were dealing with at the time. that will DEFINITELY help you. Especially since your junior and senior year grades are extremely high.
Courses though?

A college admissions book I read had interviews from the Deans of Admissions from a bunch of top Ivy schools. Most of them said that they don't look at freshman year grades at all or care very little about them. Junior year and first-term senior year grades are considered much, much more significant.

You definitely could especially if ur high school is competitive. Do you have any other scores, such as AP and SAT II?

Yes, just right an essay about that experience (talk about how it affected you and how you learned from it). I went to a mock trial camp also, which one did you go to? (I went to one at UMD) And I don't think there are mock trial scholarships, though I wish there were.

Yeah if you right an essay explaining what happened, you will definitely have a good chance of getting in, especially with your high junior and senior grades and your ACT.

You'll get into Howard pretty easily with your grades. Even if you had 2.8 with nothing wrong you'd probably get in.

You will get into Howard no sweat. Your GPA is actually excellent considering the circumstances, your ACT rocks, and your ECs are pretty good. As long as you write a good essay explaining the circumstances, I am confident that you will be able to get into Howard.

great shot, you should higher though

Hey, thanks for the replies everyone! ..

I was wondering, what do you all think my chances at NYU are?
Or Spelman College?

youll need a good essay and recs

congrats on recovering so rapidly
