What are my chances of being accepted into Howard?
I know my Freshman year grades were terrible, but my Jr. and Senior year grades were fantastic ..Could I get academic scholarships for those two years?

And can I get athletic scholarships for Cross Country and Track even though I was JV and only did them for 2 years? I would have done them the first two years, but my grades were too bad.

Are there scholarships for Mock Trial?

The reason my grades were so bad Freshman and Sophomore years is because my father died right before Freshman year started. I was depressed.

So what are my chances?

I hope to double major in African-American Studies and History with a Sociology minor.

Thanks,
SomeGirl

Where are you guys? ...Come on :[

OK OK OK ..I'll admit it, I'm guessing my senior year grades. But still, what do you think my chances are?

you have pretty good EC's, and your ACT is 6 points above their 75th percentile, and that should help significantly.
in a supplemental note, or in your essay itself, if you can tie it in, definitely make note of the fact that your father passed away before your freshman year, and then say that you realized the necessity to move past the grief and earn better grades, or something like that that sounds really heartfelt. chances are it'll make them overlook your early grades enough that they other stuff will be able to put you over the top.
also, don't count on senior year factoring into your gpa, as they will only have, at best, your first semester grades, depending on when you decide to apply.
all in all though, i'd say you have pretty decent chances. good luck.

It goes considerably beyond "guessing your senior year grades," SomeGirl. Again, good luck, but providing a hypothetical record that you hope to achieve will not result in "chances" that have anything to do with your actual situation.

Hi SomeGirl, I guess you didn't see the post I left you one of your other threads, so I will post it here as well:

You seemed frustrated that you were not getting the "chances" you hoped for, so I wanted to try to give you a thorough and thoughtful answer. I took a look at your many chances threads so I could get a better understanding of your unique situation. In the space of about 60 days, your information went from that you were a sophomore in HS with a 1.5 GPA overall who had not yet taken any tests and had few extracurriculars...

to a senior with stratospheric Jr and Sr GPA, a long list of ECs and impressive awards and an ACT score that is only achieved by 1 - 2% of students nationwide. Your GPAs, test scores, ECs and awards vary greatly from thread-to-thread, so it is hard to give meaningful chances at this point - when most of the information is guesswork.

I am impressed with your ambitions, and I encourage you to work to achieve the goals you have set for yourself for your junior and senior years in high school.

To address where you are right now: Sign up for a reasonably rigorous junior year course load - don't overload yourself with APs - one or two at the most. Achieve the best grades you can in your courses. Select only a few ECs - remember, you have to get your GPA up, so don't expend all you energy trying to put together a long EC and Award list. In October, sign up for the PSAT and PLAN to start your testing. In spring of your junior year, take the SAT and ACT. After you complete you junior year and your first round of testing, return to cc next summer and ask for "chances" based on where you actually are at that point.

You have set some great goals and expressed determination to achieve them, and I wish you the best of luck. Dream big!

I think you have a good shot at Howard. Make sure you/your councilor explains the poor grades during freshman and sophomore years.
Good Luck!

"In the space of about 60 days, your information went from that you were a sophomore in HS with a 1.5 GPA overall who had not yet taken any tests and had few extracurriculars..."

Wow, you're right! Most of the grades, scores and ECs are fictional, wishful thinking. Unbelievable.
