Accepted!

Don't know if we have an acceptance thread, but I was accepted! It's great because I only applied to one school (UW Evans--the only place I was willing to relocate) so thank heavens I got in, because the GRE was bloody expensive and I'd have taken it again if rejected. Does anyone know whether I can find out my FA package, or lack thereof, before the paper gets here? We were accepted by phone.

(Sounds like I chose UW because of location, which is only partly true--I also like the Evans School, obviously.)

Congratulations!

Who called to notify you of your admission? I would start with that person, or your professor of interest. It’s also possible that financial aid offers are still being worked out.

Thanks! I don’t know because my mother (who lives at our “permanent residence”, i.e. tax address, since we don’t own a home and are military now) answered the phone, and she was just finishing a nurse’s week of 12-hour night shifts. I’m very lucky she answered it and remembered who it was.

It’s only a master’s so I didn’t communicate in depth with a professor in particular. They are all interesting to me. I think I will wait for the paper letter and then see. There’s not a lot I can do until then anyway.

I hope I get at least some merit aid. I will be getting paid this year but I will be alone with my kids and I don’t want to have to work too much during school. Perhaps I can work with the school and then do summer consulting. Crossing my fingers.

I would not wait for a paper letter. Call the department’s director of graduate studies and express interest in funding opportunities.

Most financial aid for graduate studies comes in the form of teaching or research assistantships. That is, you work X hours per week assisting faculty with their research work or teaching duties. In return, you earn a modest stipend and/or partial or full tuition remission. There are “free money” fellowships, but those are mostly reserved for Ph.D students.

Thanks. I think I will in that case.
