Accepted

I was accepted as well-- waiting on scholarships too though.

You guys see the thing about the free trip to China if you agree to take 3 semesters of Chinese. Their new get aquainted program - wow. Chinese is tough though...............

Thanks Luke :)
I got into Rhodes as well and am very attracted to both Rhodes and Furman. As I mentioned earlier, Davidson would probably be my ultimate if I was able to get in. Just out of curiousity, what was it about Davidson your son didn't like? Was it the campus/students/or just something intangible?

Yeah..I saw that email too frosh...too bad it's Chinese...

accepted. waiting on merit money like everyone else.

the trip to china sounds interesting, but i really don't think i can get anywhere with chinese. i'm having enough trouble with languages that use the same alphabet as english. i'm not so sure i can survive through a year of chinese. (i'm sure it could be useful though). what i don't understand is why the deadline to apply is april 5th when we don't even know if we're going to furman yet (or at least i don't). furman's website says they mail out scholarship letters on the 7th, which is what most people are waiting for in order to make a decision. they should extend the application deadline for this program.

are any of you guys going to furman for sure?

I sent them an E-mail yesterday about the deadline and the financial aid and they say they sympathize about the deadline date for China but that they have to use that date to get the trip properly organized and students selected etc. I also spoke with financial aid who said that all financial aid letters should be going out between yesterday and next Monday. So financial aid letters are going out sooner rather than later. Yea Chinese would be tough for sure.

i wonder how many are going to apply.

I was accepted ED, and I'm going to Furman. The trip to China looks interesting. I wonder if everyone that got in got the email about the China trip?

my guess would be that everyone got it.
does the submission of an application equal a commitment to it?

I was told that you can submit an application and then await the financial aid decision. Then should you be selected to attend you would have to agree to attend Furman but that ofcourse assumes you rfinancial aid package is acceptable and you have agreed to attend Furman before you formally take up the offer.

Accepted.....along with two good friends. All 3 families await scholarship information/fin aid :-)

Son got accepted to Furman and today received scholarship offer! We are very flattered and happy but also confused. Visted Furman in summer and loved it but know very little about the school. Can anyone help with decision?

Would a smart but sometimes lazy, New Englander of Italian background, NY Yankee fan, apathetic Catholic, with a passion for music (piano) and math be a good fit for Furman?

His other choice is Lehigh (no scholarship) or possibly Wash U if he got in off the wait list - remote chance of that I know...
I feel like the choice is Furman: better weather, lower cost, less hard core partying, more girls to guys... vs. Lehigh: more prestige.

My son has not yet asked me for my advice, but he might, and I don't have any! Help!

Look back in the Who's waiting for merit and who got rd thread because Lukester linked a very good trip synopsis of Furman including students and Faline2 also has been most helpful in his posts..........

What might I ask was the scholarship offer? We like hearing good results while we wait for our info..............

lovemykids, If you want good insight on Furman from CC, do a search on any and all posts by Faline2. She is a Furman grad and writes beautifully about Furman good and bad. My wife and I really like Furman. Our S likes it, but not as much as we do. I personally think given what you said, your S would fit in there. Furman is probably the most difficult school to get admitted to in SC. The student body is fairly conservative, but the profs and administration are more liberal. That is a nice combo I think. As you probably saw in the summer, the campus is drop dead gorgeous and consistently ranks high on the "most beautiful" campus lists. Not a party school, you won't see too many tatoos or colored hair. The kids come from conservative backgrounds and dress/look/act like it. One complaint I've often heard is that the kids are almost too much cookie cutter, not enough diversity. Another complaint I've heard is that the school is a little isolated and that Greenville is not a big college town. I didn't see that when we visited. We are going up the day after tomorrow for the Lay/Duke scholarship interview. S will attend a class and mingle with the students. It will be interesting to see his thoughts about Furman one year after he saw it last. Which scholarship did your S win, the Wylie math scholarship?

First, I have to thank you all - I am new to CC and this is great. Reading through these threads has been a lifesaver for my sanity as well as my bitten down fingernails... (wish my son took the time to read through here - but oh well, we've been in this together all the way...)

The scholarship came really as two: Achiever ($5500) and Honor ($5500). That $11,000 a year is really attractive because we fall into the category of "too little money to afford college; too much wealth to qualify for need-based aid"... he did not apply for Wylie math for a number of reasons (didn't want to declre math as major; didn't want to go back to math teacher for yet another rec; wasn't really sure Furman was it, etc...)

But now rejections came from Vanderbilt, UNC Chapel Hill, BC, ... waiting on Wake and Emory like I said (he really wants to go south) and the more we read about Furman the more I'm loving it. (Money helps, too.) Aside from the north thing, Lehigh could be a good match, but Furman is also a good fit I think. My son is a conservative republican who, although is a new yorker at heart, really wants to escape New England at least for a while (he didn't even apply to our HS's favorite schools... Bucknell, Gettysburg, UVA, Middlebury... although Lehigh and BC are right up there.) BC was really a shock - I thought that was a target - Vandy too. It makes me wonder whether they really mean what they say about looking at the "whole person" - without sounding like his mother, I will say that he is a fabulous whole person - great tests scores, ECs like crazy and not just for the resume but because he means it, all advanced and AP courses, musical talent, but most importantly, really well balanced - way saner than his mother. He's always cared more about the learning than the grade - passionate about what he loves, less time for what he doesn't. He is actually taking this way better than I am (though I know Vanderbilt rej. hurt)
But I guess in the end, it's GPA GPA...
Anyway, I really love what I've learned about Furman. We just know so little about it up here in CT. I read through the student body stats from their course catalog and I think there are only 25 kids each from NY, NJ, CT, etc. - I think the school is getting more popular but right now everyone I talk to says "Furman? Where's that?"

lovemykids, For more insight on Furman, look at posts by Iflyjets. Her D is a sophomore there now. She has answered alot of questions too. I would recommend another visit to Furman during one of their accepted student days in April. You visited Furman last during the summer right? Sure looks different when students are in and campus is full. I warn you though, the flowers are just starting to bloom now and Furman will be irresistibly beautiful!

Thanks Lukester. I am reading through everything here and I am really excited. The posts have addressed a lot of my questions. More confused than ever now as I wait for the mail and the last few Acc/rej - don't know what to hope for!

Are people there furry? Or what? I mean, that's a crazy name, huh?

jk, One of Furman University's favorite cheers is:

"F-U!" "F-U!" "F-U!"

Imagine a few thousand people yelling that in a crowded stadium!!

I like this one from the John E. Johns (former Furman President) era:

" F-U One Time. . . F-U Two Times. . . F-U Three Times. . . F-U Aaaall the Time!"
