doesn't michigan only release decisions every other friday??

nope.. I got mine on a thursday

i got mine today...a wednesday...

being a minority does help. dont let what michigan said about not using AA anymore fool you. they have other ways such as demographics and yah i am SURE that they still do look at gender and race in determing acceptances.

I don't think you understand...they legally cannot use AA (which means gender and race) in determining admission. That page is separated from the application, so adcoms don't even see it when reviewing apps. It is NOT used. Just want to set that clear.

There are still a number of things adcoms could look at that may clue them in to a person's gender/race. And I don't think it's technically illegal for them to put ungodly weight on someone's essay if they write about the struggles of being a woman/minority, as long as it's an adcom's personal judgment on how it contributes to their character, and not just a check box on the application.

I think we all might want to keep two things in mind: With Early Response, this is an entirely new system for the admissions office; the final application deadline was just last Friday. I'm sure they're doing the best they can to sort this all out.

Secondly, we see a lot of postings from students with upper-end scores kids who may also be applying to the private Ivies and such. I doubt that the postings we see here are entirely an accurate reflection of which students are getting admitted; otherwise you'd figure you need a 34 ACT and a 4.0.

"congrats! everything was marked received on dec 3 for me, but i still havent heard back yet... i am getting really really really nervous"

rg25264 i sent mine postmarked 13th december and got my decision on jan 15th..i think u r placed on hold for comparison with other applicants...i think my 800 in biology did the magic:)..relax..i have a number of 90 percenters...(GPA 3.5+ i think) who have been on hold too...

dilksy: This is true, but again, they must have more reasons to accept someone than just mentioning "I'm hispanic/black/...." in an essay. In otherwords, as you mentioned, it must contribute to the significance of their overall character, it can't simply add points to the review sheets like in previous years.

president Mary Sue Coleman said herself that the band on AA will not stop the university of michigan from obtaining diversity. they will find someway and have found some way to obtain diversity and will continue to do so. they can look at demographics. oh this person is from detroit which is known to be mostly black people...this is a roundabout way of remaining diverse.

uhh...can someone tell me whats AA?:S

affirmative action

the reason i asked is cause one of my friends has the same schedule, ACT, less extra curriculars, but .1 higher gpa got in after only 6 or 7 weeks

Well that must be why I got in. I'm from San Diego, which is mostly Mexican people...

Let this be clear: There is a lot of this "well my friend who is not as superior to me got in, and I haven't heard back yet, blah, blah blah" stuff going around. Nobody knows why anyone got in. Maybe they wrote a fantastic essay, maybe it was a computer glitch and they slipped through the cracks. Do NOT assume that they were admitted bc of their race (I am white, btw). I know many minorities, blacks, Hispanics, etc., who have higher scores, ECs, etc. than 80% of the people on this site. Sure, you will look at them and assume they got in bc of race. And until you know they got 5s on 6 AP tests you won't be able to look past the skin color. This is not to single anyone out, no one is completely innocent of it. It's just a heads up, bc there are people on this site who want to see how future UM students respond to diversity. And when they see people complaining that they didn't get in while someone with lesser stats did, they're going to wonder. Likewise, one should most definitely not think they're in bc they are a minority. Again, Michigan is bound by law not to allow race to be a defining factor in admissions policies.

That being said, congrats to all accepted.

woo...got my email today. After being deferred...

datdo, did you apply to the college of engineering?

wow 3.24... Congratulations!

datdo: congrats! any thoughts on why you were accepted w/ pretty low GPA? I'm really happy for you!

VC: Private school GPAs, particularly at the top schools, are notoriously lower (3.2 may be considered excellent at some of them). In our own situation, try taking AP physics. The teacher is an expert, but expertise tends to be more in the field, rather than in the teaching. So the students essentially teach themselves, going on the Internet for explanations when the text is not self-evident. ONE TEST per quarter, all consisting of previous AP questions on the appropriate material. You need, I think, a 60 on the AP exam in physics to earn a grade of 5. At our school, tests are not scaled. Get an 85 and that is your grade -- a B. Or try doing eight hours of homework one night in early September and forgetting to do a one-sentence assignment in English, and getting a goose egg, making it a mathematical impossibility ever to get an A for the rest of the year.

Colleges like Michigan that take the time to analyze applications thoroughly understand this. It ain't pretty when you're going through it, though.

connman: I understand that, but a guy on this forum earlier attended a top-50 hs, had a 2250+ SAT, a 3.4 GPA, and was deferred bc of his "low GPA." So I was just asking if that guy thought there was anything--extra essay, etc.--that got him in, to help those who were deferred.

PS...fyi, top privates aren't the only ones with strenuous grading. In college, ironically, it is usually the private schools where grade INFLATION occurs. My cousin attends a very prestigious private high school in San Diego, and I know for a fact his grades are inflated (one of his parents' complaints). I think it really depends on the school, not necessarily the type of school.

how do you know that he was deferred because of his low GPA? and do they let students know why they were deferred?!...that is nice to know...

congrats to everyone accepted!!!!
