My daughter got into Providence today, she's very happy. She got a scholarship and a grant,Perkins loan and sub loans, but we have to crunch the numbers to see what the final outcome will be. It was her first "favorite", later slightly edged out by Holy Cross, but she would be happy there if she could go. Her only regret was they don't let you use your aid to go abroad.

Congrats to your daughter, Debruns. Did your daughter get one of the scholarships for the Honors college? If so, she will be happy to learn that the policy regarding using scholarship money to study abroad has been changed starting with the 2011-2012 school year. My daughter is a current soph at PC, so by the time the new policy takes effect she’ll be a senior but good news for your daughter!

Hi Peachy, I don’t see honors mentioned, she got an academic scholarship not included in the honors group. She got great grades, college courses, etc. but I’m sure the competition for those was great.
Do you have to be in the honors program to get the study abroad money?

Debruns: Below is from the PC website; it is part of a letter Fr. Shanley sent out to parents a few weeks ago. You can find it by clicking the administration tab and then looking for the letters to parents on the right side of the page. I think it was the spring 2010 letter.

Beginning in 2011-12, PC students can use institutional merit-based and need-based financial aid for study abroad. Under this new “home school” tuition and financial aid policy, students will pay Providence College tuition, rather than the particular study abroad program’s tuition, for their semester or year of study abroad. This policy change will benefit students who are current freshmen (for their junior year) or sophomores (for the first semester of their senior year).

Hope this is helpful.

Thank you, I couldn’t find it because I was looking at the study abroad site and they haven’t updated that yet, since it isn’t in effect yet.
If one award was just 5,000 more, I would be much happier, but I doubt they will change anything. I did have one friend a few years ago say they offered her son more through a scholarship when she called, but I know year to year, student to student, that is not guaranteed. Can’t hurt to try though, if it comes down to that.
Thanks again.

Son was waitlisted, tied for his first choice with Loyola Maryland where he was also waitlisted.

Accepted at UVM so he’ll deposit there and keep trying to get off the WL!

BTW, did anyone notice that there was a big tuition increase this year?

Yes, I did, this link talks about it:
[Providence College - March 2009: Tuition Announcement](http://www.providence.edu/Administration/Presidents+Office/Messages+to+Parents/March+2009.htm)

Actually, that was this year’s increase. Next year’s is worse, at least for incoming freshmen. They are freezing tuition for the classes of 2011, 2012 and 2013 at $33,610 but adding a FIVE thousand dollar increase for the class of 2014 for a tuition of $38,610. Plus $11,780 for room and board, never mind fees etc. They haven’t really broadcast it, as far as I can tell, but here it is:

Not sure it’s going to be doable…

I wonder what it will be next year? I know other colleges have had big increases also, but I was glad to hear they worked with some families to keep their children in, who were preparing to leave because of hardship. Some colleges just say, “Sorry, pay or that’s it”

The FA they sent is based on the new amount, but I would want some reassurance that large of a jump wouldn’t be forthcoming next year.

I believe current students are getting a 3-4% tuition increase, a friend who’s son attends indicated that to me a while back and that’s also how I read the link provided above. I would hope that for incoming freshmen, future tuition increases would also be in that range, or less:)

As part of the announcement of the one-time significant increase in tuition, PC indicated that future tuition increases would be in the 4% range. They made it clear this was a one-time adjustment.

"Providence College considers this adjustment beginning with the Class of 2014 as a one-time adjustment. Parents of current and prospective PC students should rely more on the recent history of PC tuition increases as a guide in carrying out financial planning to pay for a PC education:

4.9% in 2008-2009
4.0% in 2009-2010
4.0% in 2010-2011"

Correction - I misspoke yesterday. Tuition has not been frozen for existing students; it went up to $33, 610. The increase for incoming freshmen was much greater. Too bad I wasn’t mistaken about THAT! :)

I was just wait listed at pc. i have a new recomendation letter in the works. any other suggestions?
