Accepting Financial Aid to School I Might Not Attending

Hey everyone,

I accepted a financial aid package (online) from SUNY Oswego because I thought that I had to accept it within a certain time frame (according to the notes in the package) or it would be canceled. But then I was still waiting on a package for University to Scranton. At that point I was almost sure I was going to Oswego because the overall cost of attendance for Scranton was nearly three times as much.

But then I got the package from Scranton a few days ago and they were extremely generous with me. I would only have to pay less than 5k a year more than If I were to go to Oswego. Now, I'm seriously reconsidering my decision.

What I accepted from Oswego include Parent Loans and stuff. But I didn't submit the deposit. Am I still obligated to go to SUNY Oswego? What can I do to amend this?

You’re not obligated - even if you had accepted admission and paid the deposit you wouldn’t be obligated, you’d just lose that deposit. Make your decision; if you want to go to Scranton, then accept your offer there, pay your deposit at Scranton, then just contact Oswego and let them know that you won’t be attending. Do it ASAP so that they can release those funds and possibly offer them to someone else who makes an appeal.

I’ll do that. Thank you very much! :)
