Accommodations for Depression

What accommodations are typically available to students with depression on college campuses? I am currently suffering from severe depression and associated issues, such as anxiety. I am doing well in my classes for right now but it is extremely difficult for me to focus on work, get to class without stress, and take care of my other needs. I am receiving treatment, etc. and I would like to continue at school at least through finals. What accommodations (if any) or other options are typically available for students with depression, to help make things more manageable? If background helps at all- I am currently a first semester freshman at a relatively selective private university.

It depends on your college and what you need - start with a visit to the campus disabilities office to obtain an application and find out what type of accommodations are available at your college. There is an application (usually not long) that you fill out and one that goes to your treatment provider to complete. In our experience, the types of possible accommodations range from housing preference to a reduced course load. I am glad you are receiving treatment. If you are finding daily functioning difficult, please let your counselor know; you might also consider getting in touch with the dean of students to explain your situation. A second semester medical leave may be in order - please also tell your parents if you have not already. Your health is most important and that includes of course mental health. College is not a race, the school will be there still if you need to go more slowly.

You could also get permission to turn in assignments late or delay tests. I agree that a reduced workload might be a good idea.

I think you’ll find the disabilities office to be VERY helpful. The one at our local school has been great. They will even contact professors directly if you need them to.

By the way, more than one of our son’s professors have told us that MANY students require accommodations. Each professor will have at least one student every semester who needs them. One of his teachers even shared about her struggles with depression as a teenager! So I am happy you recognize that you need help and are willing to ask for it. Keep us posted on how you’re doing!
