According to Fafsa, I don't exist?!

Hi everyone.

I'm kinda freaking out because whenever I get my SAR back, it keeps telling me that the names of myself and my parents don't match up with the SS#s. But I checked the cards and it all matches up. What should I do?

I checked the SAR last week, and everything seemed fine. I just checked it today, and it's flagged again.

HELP!!

Thanks!

I would suggest you call the social security administration. Were you all born in the US?

I was born in Russia, but I came here when I was 9 months old.

I talked to my college counselor and he said it’s normal for FAFSA to flag students’ US Citizenship status and that can be fixed by sending colleges a copy of my passport. But I have no idea what to do with my parents!

So, this is lame. I just called the SSA…after a 20 minute call…and it was not helpful, at all.

The guy on the phone gave me an address to go to, but I just googled it and it doesn’t even exist!

Should I just ignore it for now? Because the FAFSA did go through, and it WAS signed by my parent. This is so frustrating… :(

^ Could it be that your SS has your middle name as your first name and your form has it differently or vice versa?

In one of your previous posts you note that your sibling is a College Freshman, Did he encounter the same problem and if so, you may want to check into how that was resolved.

Hope you get this resolved soon.

I have no idea! I checked the SS cards before I called the SSA, and everything matched what was written on the FAFSA.

I asked my brother if he had the same problem last year. He might have, without realizing it, but he told me he didn’t.

Thank you for the reply!

I have the same problem as well, except that I am the only one in my family that apparently “does not exist.” I already faxed my passport to financial aid offices and I have not gotten a confirmation back. I don’t think it’s a baaad fix, it just creates a headache with sending in additional forms. But beyond that, there is nothing else. So, no sweat.

Do the names on the social security cards match the names on the FAFSA EXACTLY? Are you SURE you didn’t transpose any numbers? Are you sure you didn’t mix up mom’s with dad’s?

What does the error message say, exactly?

Thanks for the response, Seeker. I’m not too worried about my “Citizenship” status - that can be fixed by showing a passport to colleges and whatnot. I’m more worried that my parents don’t “exist!”

Kelsmom; That’s what was weird - they matched exactly!

Error Message on the SAR Comments:

Your father’s name as reported on your FAFSA does not match the name in the
Social Security Administration’s (SSA) records for his Social Security Number
(SSN). Therefore, you must correct his SSN (Item 61) or his name (Items 62 and
63). Select the ‘Make Corrections’ button at the bottom of the page to make the
correction online. If his name is correct, you must confirm it by reentering the
answer in the ‘Enter Correct Value’ field for both his last name and first name
initial in Items 62 and 63. If you confirm your father’s name, your father
should also contact the SSA to make sure that they correct it in their records.
The SSA can be contacted by calling 1-800-772-1213 or by visiting

Your mother’s name as reported on your FAFSA does not match the name in the
Social Security Administration’s (SSA) records for her Social Security Number
(SSN). Therefore, you must correct her SSN (Item 65) or her name (Items 66 and
67). Select the ‘Make Corrections’ button at the bottom of the page to make
the correction. If her name is correct, you must confirm it by reentering the
answer in the ‘Enter Correct Value’ field for both her last name and first name
initial in Items 66 and 67. If you confirm your mother’s name, your mother
should also contact the SSA to make sure that they correct it in their records.

Your mother was issued a Federal Student Aid PIN to sign your 2010-2011
FAFSA. We were unable to verify her name, date of birth, and/or Social
Security Number (SSN) with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Therefore,
her PIN has been deactivated. Follow the instructions below to resolve your
mother’s problem with the SSA.

It’s odd because when I submitted corrections, that wasn’t on the SAR comments. Instead, it just said to check anything that had an “h” next to it; our existence being one of them.

It’s so weird…

EDIT: And regarding the deactivation of my mom’s pin…it still worked when I submitted corrections! So, I’m not sure if it’s just a fluke or…

This is a very odd situation, and I would suggest first double-checking to make sure you did not put mom’s info on dad’s line & dad’s on mom’s. If that checks out, please have them contact the Social Security Administration (or better yet, maybe they could visit the nearest Social Security Office) to find out what is going on. If it were me, I would really want to find out what the heck is going on.

As for the PIN issue … is it possible you entered mom’s date of birth incorrectly? I only ask that in case you entered mom’s info on dad’s line/dad’s on mom’s on the FAFSA. Then the PIN issue might be another issue altogether. Otherwise, the PIN issue is related to the SSN problem.

I have no idea. I called the SSA, it was of no help…at all. The guy on the phone had no idea what he was talking about and then he gave me some number that was disconnected. Haha.

I submitted corrections to my FAFSA with 2009 tax form data, so I’ll see what the SAR flags when it gets processed. If it flags the SS#'s again, that would really be annoying.

Thanks for the advice, kelsmom!
