According to Gallup poll, Michigan residents not as keen to move states as I would have thought...

It would seem that residents of Michigan are more satisfied than residents of Illinois, Connecticut, New York or Massachusetts.

<a href="http://www.gallup.com/poll/168770/half-illinois-connecticut-move-elsewhere.aspx">http://www.gallup.com/poll/168770/half-illinois-connecticut-move-elsewhere.aspx</a></p>

I know I’m bumping this up but it caught my eye. I wonder how much of that is because those who wanted to leave the state already have. There was massive out migration in the late 2000s, early 2010s.

Even still, the state is losing grads at an alarming rate: Brain drain: See what percentage of recent graduates leave Michigan, and why they relocate - mlive.com;

Also an interesting piece: <a href=“Despite population growth, more people left Michigan in 2013 than moved in - mlive.com”>Despite population growth, more people left Michigan in 2013 than moved in - mlive.com;

I count myself as one who will be leaving once I graduate unless the U offers me a job. There is very little to no incentive for grads to stay here. Especially since many of us have already had family leave during the great recession.

Did you poll Detroit residents?

A lot of people leave because there are more/better job opportunities outside of the state than in the state. The state has good schools but not so many jobs to match.

I would prefer it if my job was in SE Michigan, but it’s not there. Ann Arbor has way better food than here. I usually went to one of 7 different restaurants in Ann Arbor and I’ve tried pretty much all the restaurants around here (there aren’t that many), not a single one is as good as one of those 7.

The area I’m in is also just more “rural” (not really rural - but less composed of a city than Ann Arbor - everything is just far away from everything else) than I’m accustomed to.

Vlad, are you in the west side of the state now? (Grand Rapids region?)

I lived in Battle Creek for a summer because that’s where my fiance’s from. Never, ever, ever again. I wouldn’t mind staying in SE Michigan. I actually live in a great school district (not Ann Arbor) but the state continues to gut my area of work. I’m not too optimistic about job opportunities once I graduate. Almost all the people I know who graduated this year with jobs (from grad school, not undergrad) were moving out of state or were going to work for the U.

It’s unfortunate. I really do love Michigan. I’ve lived here all my life, but I’m not eager to live in a state where they think my line of work is unnecessary (or worse- sinful and should banned). shrug

I left Michigan after graduating but I’m from Ohio. I hope to eventually work back near Cleveland as well

Nope, different state. Still around the Great Lakes though.

I’m on the west side of Michigan and hope to stay. I like it here and always have.
