Accounting cert at UMBC

UMBC doesn’t offer a traditional accounting degree. However, UMBC does offer an accounting certificate, you can find it here: http://economics.umbc.edu/accounting/

I’m interested in getting it with a bachelors in information systems. I think this would be a decent option, because I’d have the ability to go into two different industries post grad. However, I’m not so certain if that’s true. Would an accounting cert give me the ability to get into the accounting world? I’m given the impression that the cert allows the holder to take the CPA exam if they have 150 credits (which I would). However, I’m unsure if not having a degree would hinder me. I don’t NEED to join the big four, however, having the option would be nice.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

This question is very program specific and I am not familiar with the program. Two steps I would recommend taking are:

  1. Look at the classes you will have to take for the certificate and compare it to the classes required by your state board to become a CPA. I would image you can find all of this information online.
  2. Talk to someone in the accounting department at UMBC and ask.
