I am an engineering major graduating in June of 10'. I took an accounting class during the summer and realized that it was for me. Now I want to pursue this track and take the CPA exam sometime next year. My school does not offer an accounting major or minor. I was wondering.....what is more respected.....an accounting certificate or accounting minor?

Well you are going to need a good number of accounting credits and business credits to be able to take the CPA. So keep that in mind.

A CPA is clearly going to be way more respected than a minor. In fact, it will be a requirement for a lot of positions in the accounting field. However, to be eligible for a CPA, you will need to complete the course and hour requirements. Your best bet is probably to finish up your engineering degree and go to a graduate program for accounting. It will be able to provide you with the accredited program and course requirements you will need to complete in order to sit for the CPA exam as well as give you a masters degree in accounting.

openedskittles, I’m pretty sure you asking if a accounting certificate or an accounting minor is better for his situation. Not if a CPA is more respected than a minor. In that situation alley cat, an MSA would be a good option.

I already have a lot of business class credits and take the CPA exam later when I work for a couple of years and attend MBA school.

I want to know which is more respected for now…an accounting certificate or accounting minor?

Probably better off getting neither. Wait for the MSA, just wasting your time.

Thanks for the MSA advice! I will look into that. When I graduate college, I will be around couple thousands of dollars in debt. In your opinion, what are some strong MSA programs that you recommend? In or out of California? What do you think about the idea of taking out more loans just to pursue a Masters in Accounting?

You pretty much have no choice if you want to be eligible to sit and be certified as a CPA.

I have taken 9 business classes or 36 biz units from my dual Engineering-Business major.

Will a certificate in accounting meet the educational requirement for their CPA?

you seem like a relatively bright chap, do yourself some RESEARCH and I’m quite positive you will find the answer.

I’m doing my RESEARCH right HERE and I’m quite positive that I will find my answer from bright people like you at cc

Check your state board site for the accounting credits you will need in your state and if there are specific class requirements. It is possible that your certificate or minor will satisfy the credit requirement as I’m sure you already meet the business credit requirement. Each state is different though so you’ll need to check it out to be sure.

can an Accounting certificate or minor land me a job anywhere even if I do a completely different major? I am a global studies major at UCLA, what do you think? Or how can I attempt to do a path for a accounting/business career?

In the state of California, they say 36 accounting units and 36 business units

Hi. Are you a CPA now? I am asking myself this same question now that you asked in 09

@Racct77 Many of the educational requirements have changed since 2009 so be sure to look to your state Board of Accountancy and see what requirements are currently in place (information should be online).
