If you are a student at William and Mary majoring in government, do you have the ability to take an elective course in accounting over in the business school?

Thank you.

Principles of Accounting is a prerequisite for being accepted to the business program, so anyone can take it. Higher level accounting courses I'm not sure about.

Principles of Accounting is open to anyone. Upper level courses are open to non-business majors/minors only on a space-available basis, pursuant to the following taken from the course catalog:

Students who are not pursuing a formal program in the Mason
School of Business may enroll in business classes for which they
have satisfied the course prerequisites for elective credit on a
space available basis.

I'm a junior and a finance w/accounting and couldn't even get into some accounting courses this semester, so that about sums up your chances.

If you want to just take intro accounting (BUAD203), you can easily get into that even your freshman year. There are generally 3-4 sections of this offered per semester. It is a prereq to enter the business school so it is open to anyone. I took it last semester and I'm a freshman. Good class.
