Accounting/Finance vs Accounting/MIS

So I'm a soon-to-be sophomore and I have to declare my concentration soon. Originally I planned to do accounting, finance, and MIS but there isn't slot in my schedule to fit it in.

I'm interested in all three concentrations but I have to choose so I was hoping to get some input from you guys.

I know accounting and finance go side-by-side but I'm definitely going the CPA route, not sure after that. Though I feel I wouldn't get to enjoy all the tech stuff I enjoy if I go this route (I do like accounting so far in the classes I have taken though).

If I go MIS, I might go CPA or MIS. MIS is one of my possible concentrations because I have a deep interest in technology but also in business (Which is why I am not in engineering). However, I feel that if I go to like MIS field I would be wasting my classes I took for MIS.

Alternatively, I could go MIS, Accounting (Not getting required classes for CPA), and Finance. Not sure how well that would work though.

One thing is for sure though: Accounting is one of my concentrations. Not sure about the rest.

Any help from you guys would be appreciated.

It sounds like you have a legitimate interest in MIS, so my first inclination is MIS and Accounting. You will probably have to take a couple finance courses for your accounting major, as is, so why not focus in an are that is completely different, yet a valuable skill set.

I’ve mentioned it in the past, but an MIS and Accounting double sets you up to go into a Big 4 Risk practice. You would basically be the ideal undergraduate recruit for that position. You could also probably get looks at their IT groups that utilize a little accounting as well.

You definitely want to be able to sit for the CPA exam, so make sure that is feasible.

What are you career goals? You mentioned a lot about the different possibilities, but didn’t say much about what you actually want to do after college. I think deciding on a major and knowing what you want to consider after college go hand-in-hand.

Well, I suppose my career goals are quite vague at the moment but I hope to one day to be in a high executive managing position in a corporation (As for managing what, I don’t know). Initially, I was intending to start off at the Big 4 and move on to another corporation as a manager in a small to mid sized firm.

Anyway for MIS and Accounting, how suitable are they together? I know for those that go straightly accounting, they have the chance to rise to very high positions in a corporation.

Lastly, not sure if you would know but I’ll ask anyway. Do you think I will be missing a valuable asset and weakening my ability to get a accounting job (compared to other undergrads) if I don’t take finance? I know many people going the accounting and finance route and I don’t want to uncompetitive against them.

All other things being equal, an accounting/MIS major will have an advantage over an accounting/finance major. The reason being is that MIS will give a candidate an entirely new and useful skill set, whereas finance will be considered somewhat redundant. Of course it depends a lot on what type of job you are looking at, but overall I would go with MIS.

Over a 40 year career starting today, MIS will grow and evolve significantly, offering many career avenues.

Due to rapid growth of the accounting field, to compete, i feel alot of people (including myself) are trying to add something with there accounting to stand out and become more marketable.

From what i learned this MIS is the best thing to add with it, over accounting info systems(AIS), info systems and audit controls(ISAC) etc. But possibly better than throwing in IT education is specializing in something like tax.

Im now at the point where im trying to choose which route to take. Lack of experience is fueling my indecisiveness. I would really like some insight on the idea of doubling up, specializing for a MAcc Tax and a Bach in MIS, how does that sound? I call it the best of both worlds lol, sounds unstoppable to me.
