Accounting Internships

I am in a bit of a tough spot. I am a Junior accounting major and I interviewed with four of the big four/six public accounting firms but was not extended an offer by any of them. I have found myself scrambling to send my resume anywhere and everywhere to find experiential employment for the summer of 2015. I have been searching major bank and insurance companies to apply for a summer position but have seem to run out of ideas. I applied to PNC, Liberty Mutual, JP Morgan, State Street, and Santander. Capital one, Chase, HSBC, TD Bank, and Hanover are no longer accepting applications. My best ideas are to apply to big insurance companies like Metlife and Geico. Does anyone else know of any good internship programs an accounting major could apply to?

If it is any help my experience is that I currently process trades at State Street Corp and am the treasurer of my fraternity.

I know a lot of those accounting firms recruit again in the Spring semester so that may be of some comfort to you; I would check with your oncampus recruiting office to see if they are making a stop at your campus again. If not, you may still apply again. I know that in my experience people who were passed over in the fall semester (which is often more competitive) are considered seriously again if they reapply in the spring.

Additionally, look for internal audit internships at other companies. I know some people who interned in internal audit for companies like Comcast and Marriott; don’t think that you have to stick with only companies in the finance and accounting sector since most large corporations have an internal audit function and many are looking for audit.

Oh, and don’t overlook the federal government. All Cabinet-level agencies have an Inspector General office and those often have internships. Additionally, the PCAOB has internships too and those are very valuable experience even if you don’t want to work for the federal government full time.
